Author~ Annarti
Disclaimer~ Still mine
Notes~ 15 minute fic, word 97. Yep, that it is. It's also very short, but whatever.
~ ~ ~
The fifteen horses stood in a straight line on the threshold of the Raykinian desert, shifting and snorting with impatience and flicking ears and tails at a multitude of flies. Their riders squinted out at the incalculable distance, some leaning forward in their saddles as though in an effort to see to the other side, others shifting their glance between the General and the desert, a few looking as bored and restless as the horses.
“You’re absolutely certain?” Nol asked again, worriedly eyeing the orange horizon.
Nimay sighed in exasperation and nodded again. She held up her water skin, which had been refilled in Ni-Mytaa, and pointed in a north-easterly direction. There was most definitely an oasis up there. They would reach it by sunset quite easily.
Cutting across the desert here would effectively cut off a week’s travel, and it wasn’t as though they were stupid city people with no regard for the desert and its dangers. They all knew how to fight should any of the desert tribes become hostile, and Nimay’s desert magic would easily lead them to the various watering holes that dotted the sands.
“I mean, really, absolutely certain?”
The swordswoman groaned and collapsed forwards in her saddle, much to Ashburn’s dislike. Sometimes, the prince’s distrust of magic got on her nerves. She patted the mare’s neck apologetically and straightened, then glanced imploringly at the General.
Rau shifted slightly in his saddle. “By sunset, you say?”
Nimay gave another slow, clear nod.
The General sighed. “Okay fine. But if the sun hits the horizon and there’s no water, we’re turning back.”
Nimay grinned and set Ashburn into motion. The prospect of a nice long bath, her first in three months, was becoming more and more real.
