Ramnaré sighed as she lay under the covers, shivering as a breeze blew through the doorway. She snuggled over, her shoulders against Ika’s chest, as much in an effort to see if the younger woman was awake as to warm herself up.
Ika made a quiet noise of pleasure, then slid one arm around Ramnaré’s waist, cupping one breast lightly in her hand. Her fingers were cold against Ramnaré’s skin.
“What’s wrong?” the chef mumbled, her words half-lost in Ramnaré’s hair.
“Nothing much… I’m just thinking…”
“Hmm?”
“I’ve earned enough money now; I’m thinking of moving out, getting a place of my own.”
“But?”
Ramnaré rolled over to face Ika and propped herself up on one elbow, but her lover’s expression was hidden in the bedroom’s shadows. Her thoughts were instead on Ika’s hand on her back, playing with a few locks of hair. “I want you to come with me.”
Ika stopped playing with her hair, but only to pull the healer towards her in a tight hug. “You sound worried that I’m going to say no,” she laughed quietly, “How could I do anything but agree?”
Ramnaré smiled, a shiver running up her spine, warm this time. “I knew you would, but there’s always going to be some worry, you know?”
“Mhmm.” Ika rolled over and pressed her own back against Ramnaré with a contented sigh. She grabbed both the healer’s hands and planted them firmly on her breasts. They were soft, but no warmer than Ramnaré’s. “Where were you thinking of moving to?”
Ramnaré shrugged. “Closer to the palace would be nice, since we both work there. Maybe forth district.”
Ika turned her head around to look up at Ramnaré. She still couldn’t see the chef’s face in the dark, but she could well imagine the shock on it. “Forth district? Are you serious? How much do you healers earn?”
Ramnaré raised her eyebrows suggestively, then remembered that Ika wouldn’t be able to see her and squeezed her breast a couple of times instead. “Wouldn’t you like to know?” she said, her voice deep and husky.
The chef laughed and laid her head back on the pillow, “I need to reassess my career path.”
“Lin’s blood no! You’re too good a chef for that.”
Ika shook her head. “No, I meant quit and live off of you. I’ll stay home and just cook for two, how does that sound?”
Ramnaré drummed her fingers for a moment, pretending to mull the idea over. “That would work in theory…”
“But?” The prompt was distinctly more amused than last time.
“Something I forgot to mention…” She put her mouth close to Ika’s ear and whispered conspiratorially. “We’re going halves.”
“Ah, so now the truth comes out.”
“You’re still coming though?”
Ika rolled her head around again, brushing her lips gently over Ramnaré’s cheek before finding her mouth in the dark and catching them in a smooth, delicate kiss. “Of course.”
“I still earn more than you though.”
“Figured as much.”
