I'm sorry it took so long to realise you were dead.

Nimay, Yamin, Nol: Rest in peace. I'm sorry I couldn't keep you alive on my own. I tried. I promise, I tried. For almost four years I wrote in silence, wrote in hope. I asked for help; I begged for help. I can't do this alone. I tried so hard to write without hope of ever being read, but I can't do it. I can't put my heart and soul and hours and years of my life into something nobody will ever look at. I tried so hard, but it hurts too much. I've cried for you half a dozen times this year alone. I'm sure I will dozens more. Hopefully the mourning will become easier with time. Hopefully I can stop feeling resentment towards those who let you die.

I wish someone would have helped.

comments

I love how they all came out, my boys! I love the character in their poses, which was the main reason I drew them sitting (final reason being it fits best in the top right corner of the page where they go in the Big Book of Stuff). I love how their clothing came out and the contrasts between the showffs and those who'd rather just sit on the sidelines; between Kaen and Rumal, especially. Both are absolutely 100% flaunting their wealth, but Kaen's SO much classier about it. The archers scrubbing themselves up under their royal new recruit's influence. Anganur, Ulkar and Kaen, my brick shithouses, toll-u and lanky Gylepi and Yoryl Noodlearm... I'm just so happy with all these boys.

Particular shoutouts to Cassie, who's been so long since she posted I completely forget her username on DW, for helping me so much with these boys. From help on how to specifically improve faces or poses, to redlining Kaen's face to make him less freshfaced 20-year-old and more maaaaan, to general 'y'know you can totally do feet better, stop cheating on them' pushes. She makes me so much better :<

( King's Own Makakis )

This'd work better if they were in a scene but that'd mean drawing a scene annnnnd I can't be bothered. They're starting to look like a real species now, though, pleased about that! When I get all the character art done I'll be moving onto kingdom art, which will include wildlife, and I plan to do a full, detailed set on drawing them. How their heads work, feet, exactly where the angles on the back go. Like some of these guys are pretty flat-footed on the front feet while others are more up on their toes, be good to standardise that kind of thing. Working through them like this before doing that makaki design sheet works for me, tho, because this is how I've been figuring out how I want to draw them. Some of their necks are too short. Big beefy destrier chests are fun, too, especially compared with their boney little butts.

( King's Own Swords )

Lefties represent XD I've also added Nimay's and Nol's to this one, Nimay's entirely unchanged except to give it the curved blade, Nol the same plus I've given him a more detailed guard, which was the obvious place to put some royal swirlies.

YAY THEY'RE DONE!

comments

Assili also prefers workmanship in the form of delicate gold rather than showstopping feathers, a character preference I'm seriously recinsidering but gosh she does look pretty with it all.

Comparisons, both with the old and with no makeup:

( comparisons )

comments

The Orana was in port, rocking against the most favoured of the docks, closest to the centre of town. It wasn’t large, only enough to cover a month and a half of wages for a voyage that had taken a year to accomplish, but Sen knew they would improve. For more dangerous crews, those whose ships were confiscated when the crew was imprisoned, Sen would have been offered the captured ship, too, but these were minor pirates, not much worse than tax evaders. Captain Hin and her crew would be fined and sent on their way once they had paid it. In any case, Sen knew she wouldn’t be able to crew a second ship. Her first was barely trained yet.

( 2105 words )

comments

The problem with crewing her ship with bastards, Sen found, was that none of them had any experience at sea. None had so much as rowed a fishing boat before. Even Kaiji suggested that they might bring experienced sailors on board, just until they were able to train some of their own, but Sen refused to compromise. They were experienced enough now to train new crew. What they did ask of their new crew, though, was fighting experience. That much they could learn on land.

( 1853 words )

comments

It was far easier to just let everyone know, stop the boys from trying to romance them and not have to steal hidden kisses in the dark. The captain was only disappointed because it meant he still had to find reasons to keep his male crew on board until he could find some more female crew members. He even offered to marry them, but Kaiji asked instead that her mother do the honours. Captain Gendas said that was cheeky, being as they were halfway across the world at the time, but he agreed to detour through Jita on their next tax trip to Ryas.

( 2036 words )

comments

Four names kept coming up, names they had been hearing and idolising for years before, too, but it wasn’t until Captain Wik of the Cibo, the only bounty hunter that ever came to Jita, instantly mentioned Cocoa Black that they properly decided on a destination. The Exeter was a merchant trader carrying Raykinian steel, Kazinian furs and alcohol from both. The crew was stressed, worried that they wouldn’t sell their wares for as much as they needed. The ship was in a bad way, leaking such that two crew members were always running up and down from the hold with buckets, and they desperately needed a solid profit to buy the wood to fix their ship. Despite the stressful atmosphere of the ship, though, Sen was thrilled to finally be on the ocean.

( 2002 words )

comments

She didn’t entirely want to, either. On the morning of her birthday, she and Kaiji were cleaning the morning’s catch, along with half a dozen other children in the village. It was a communal gathering. If one fishing boat didn’t have a good day, another may have caught too much for one family to eat. Everything was tossed together and distributed among the families for breakfast. This morning, Kaiji was gutting the smaller fish while Sen cleaned them. The bigger teenagers got the bigger fish, like salmon and long, slippery garfish. No part of the fish went to waste. The guts and the scales would be boiled up to make stock for soup that night, with kelp that hung in dried ribbons in the sun.

( 1969 words )

comments

Sen sat on the beach, knees drawn up, watching the sea change colour under sun and clouds without really seeing it. She had heard nothing but rumour of Tu for four years now, but the more she heard the same ones over and over again, the more she started to believe them. She had been such a naïve little kid when she had last seen Tu. She had believed every word Tu had told her and tried to reason it out even when it didn’t make sense, but now…

( 2044 words )

comments
