Lii collapsed back against the back wall of the healing house with an exhausted but relieved sigh. She’d been run off her feet all day, not just with treating the almost inundation of patients who seemed to be invading the healing house en masse since lunch time, but she’d had to quite literally run all the way to the markets and back again to buy some vital herbs and more bandages. The sun was just setting now, and she could be certain she hadn’t been able to sit down since arriving here at dawn.

“I’ve never had a more exhausting day in my life,” she declared, resting back against the wall, listening to her heart as it gradually began to slow down now that she was finally able to rest. She wriggled her toes to drop her sandals to the floor, surprised that their soles hadn’t been worn through after today.

“Oh-ho-ho,” Fali laughed darkly, sitting down beside her and shuffling back against the wall, “You haven’t seen anything yet, Lii my girl. You were on that day last year, weren’t you, Narine?”

“Oh Lin’s blood,” Narine swore vehemently, “That makes today look completely dead.”

“Why, what happened?”

Fali stretched her arms over her head, preparing for a long tale. “Did you hear about that huge fight that went on in the southern districts? I think it was a month or two before you started training here.”

Lii frowned. “I vaguely remember hearing about that. I don’t know any of the details about it though.”

Fali shook her head. “Neither do we. We were having a perfectly normal morning of pouring out cups of hangover cure, then we heard this almighty fight break out not far beyond that wall there.” She gestured lazily out the door at the palace’s eastern wall. “It went on for a good hour, would you say, Narine?”

Narine shook her head, braids dancing. “It must have been longer than that. I mean, when they started coming in here, there were at least fifty of them!”

“Oh easily. Yamin had to send messengers off to get a hold of everyone who worked here, whether they were rostered on or not. I lost count of how many bones I had to set that day. My shoulders were that gone that I needed a massage by the end of it.”

The trainee healer cringed. “That sounds bad.”

“It gets worse,” Narine told her, sitting down on a bed block opposite her, “There were obviously two sides to this fight, right? And both sides ended up in here, all cramped in together in the same building.”

“I think I can see where this is going,” Lii grimaced.

Narine nodded grimly. “Half the palace guard came in here to break it up, as well as some training army guys.”

“And to top it all off,” Fali said, raising her hands in anguish, “This was during an Aeia-damned heatwave!”

Lii groaned in sympathy. “Suddenly, today doesn’t seem so bad,” she murmured.
