Nimay stretched her wings wider as she drifted through the damp air. Far below, the brown scar of the road wound its way through the carpet of trees. She could make out the cluster of red, blue, orange and purple shirts that were the rest of the King’s Own.

Just above her was the layer of cloud that had been blanketing the Kazinian mountains for the last few weeks, with no sign of dissipating. Nimay glanced up at the thick, grey blanket and gave her wings another leisurely flap. How far up did the clouds go? They couldn’t go on forever, could they?

She looked down at the Own again, then back up at the clouds. Why not? There were still fourteen of them down there; they could handle themselves if anyone attacked, and she couldn’t see anyone for at least half an hour’s ride up the road anyway.

She grinned to herself and pumped her wings with more purpose this time, stroking them firmly against the wet Kazinian air to soar up higher towards the clouds. As they wrapped themselves around her, she lost her view of the dark green forest below her. No matter where she looked, everything was the same uniform grey. It was worse than being in fog. At least then she could see the ground at her feet, but now, the only way of telling which way was up was to stop flapping her wings and see which way she fell.

She shook her head and held one hand to her temple. She was beginning to get dizzy and light-headed—the air was getting thinner, and she had to take deeper breaths to get the same amount of air in her lungs. She shivered as the cold increased, gripping her cloak and wrapping it around herself as best she could in the wind.

The clouds were definitely getting whiter though, allowing more light through them the higher up she flew. There was an end to them, somewhere up there.

Nimay frowned and gritted her teeth against the ever-increasing cold, feeling as though every flap of her wings needed more energy than the last.

Finally though, she broke through the layer of cloud, and gasped at the sight that met her eyes.

The clouds spread out around her right to the horizon, like a huge, fluffy grey blanket, but above her the sky was clear and blue. The sun was just setting in the west, its bright golden orb stretching out crimson lines against the clouds.

Nimay grinned broadly and laughed despite her breathlessness. She drifted just above the cloud line, shaking her head to think that down below, the Own was still riding through mud and possibly rain by now.

As beautiful as the land above the clouds was, it was quite literally taking Nimay’s breath away, and she gladly spilt the air from her wings and dropped back into the clouds, beckoning farewell to the sun.

As she dropped back out into the dismal, grey land below, she spun over onto her back to look back up at the clouds. However bad it became down here, she would always know that the sun still shone, somewhere up above the clouds.
