Notes~ kawa~ 65. From about a month after Yoryl's accepted into the Own.

Yoryl frowned in the mirror, sighing irritably at his hair. It just wouldn’t cooperate today, no matter what he did with it. He shook it out once more and raked it back with his fingers, trying to keep the damn stuff smooth. If it wouldn’t work this time, then he’d just go with it down.

Kila chose that moment to sidle up behind him, smiling at his reflection in the mirror as she took his hands from his hair and began raking her own slender fingers through it.

Yoryl smiled appreciatively at her. “You’re a life saver.”

Kila smiled back, but she seemed distant, like there was something else on her mind. She had something she wanted to talk about, Yoryl could tell.

She sighed heavily as she pulled Yoryl’s hair tie. “We need to talk.”

Yoryl’s shoulders slouched at the tone she had used. “I had a feeling you were going to say that.” He took one of her hands in his and sat down on the bed, patting the spot next to him for her to sit. She did so, but awkwardly, as though she wasn’t sure exactly how to start.

“What’s on your mind?” Yoryl prompted, reaching one hand over to play with the hair at the nape of her neck, just how she liked it.

Kila started fiddling with the beads on her dress. “You’re gay, aren’t you?”

The blade archer paused for half a second. Of all the things he’d expected her to say, that wasn’t too high on his list. “What makes you say that?” he asked, neither confirming nor denying her suspicions.

Kila shook her head, as though trying to convince herself otherwise. “It’s just… people have started talking since you got into the Own.”

Yoryl shrugged this off. “I warned you about that. there are worse rumours around about the other guys, believe me.”

“It’s gotten me thinking though,” Kila admitted quietly, “I mean… your sword has pink jewels on it.”

The blade archer nodded slowly. “Good, well, I didn’t actually have any input into the design of that sword. What else?”

“You spend longer over your hair than I do, especially in the last month or so.”

“I’m in the public eye now; I don’t want people thinking I’m a slob.”

Kila shook her head in exasperation. “How long have we been together, Yoryl? Six or seven years? You’re twenty-four, and you haven’t asked me to marry you yet.”

Yoryl frowned. “I wasn’t aware you wanted to. I thought you were happy with us just living together. You’ve never been one for big celebrations or anything.”

“Yoryl,” she said sternly, finally looking up from her dress and straight in his eyes, “You haven’t kissed me in almost a year.”

Yoryl opened his mouth to spill out yet another excuse, but this time he couldn’t find any words, so he closed it again and looked down at his knees.

“You see? You can’t even do it now. And I know I haven’t been imagining it when you eye off other men, even when you’re taking me out to dinner.”

He still didn’t look up from his knees. He’d been trying to tell her for the past three or four years, but somehow the time was just never right, or he couldn’t find the right words. He was almost relieved that she’d found out herself.

“Okay,” he said finally, slapping his hands on his knees, “Yes, I am.”

Kila nodded to herself and looked back down at her beading. “In that case, I’m leaving. I don’t know where. I’ll find somewhere downstream where nobody even knows who the Own is, let alone their girlfriends.” She sprang off the bed and fled from the room, slamming the door behind her.

Yoryl blinked at the door for a few moments, then fell back on the bed and started laughing.
