Garuk watched as Nimay rolled her head on her shoulders, heading ever-westward back to Ni-Yana. She paused and bent forwards, shading her eyes with one hand as she squinted out towards the horizon, then she turned and gestured towards it, a smug look on her face.

Garuk leant forwards himself, trying to make out what she was looking at from the wavering mirage of the horizon. He squinted, just barely able to see a jagged line in the sand—the gorge of the Ra-Lin. He grinned and applauded Nimay’s efforts, feeling the pent-up tension of the past week slipping from his shoulders.

Nimay raised her eyebrows at him in a way that could only have said, “See? I told you so.”

The archer shrugged. “Not my fault that the only desert guy I know gets lost in his own home district! I was sceptical.”

Nimay shook her head and turned back towards the gorge, rolling her shoulders as she did.

Garuk rested his forearms on his saddle to look over at Gylepi. “Why don’t you have desert magic, anyway? We could have started making this journey four years ago.”

The taller archer shrugged. “I never got taught.”

Garuk frowned in confusion. “I thought it was a genetic thing, that got passed down through the generations.”

Gylepi shook his head. “Not quite. I mean, it’s passed down, but you have to be taught it to some extent.” He frowned and scratched his jawbone. “It’s kind of like learning to talk when you’re a child. Everyone around you talks all the time, so then you start experimenting with it, and the more experienced people correct you when you say something wrong.”

“Right…” Garuk said slowly, “But your parents both had desert magic, didn’t they? How come you didn’t pick it up from them?”

Gylepi snorted. “Living in a house in the forth district? How much searching for water do you think they needed to do there?”

“Good point and well made,” Garuk answered with a grin. “Still would have thought they’d teach you the raw basics though.”

“You’d think that, but no.” He sighed and sat up straight in the saddle, putting on the slight desert roll of his father’s accent. “‘Yes, let’s force the boy into the army, whether he likes it or not, and not teach him the most useful thing he’ll know out there, ho ho ho!’” He groaned and slouched forwards again.

Garuk patted him on the back with mock sympathy. “Can’t you learn it now?”

The taller archer shook his head. “You have to learn it when you’re young. I tried to get Mama to teach me when I found out about that desert survival thing we did as trainees, but she got frustrated when I couldn’t get the basics, and that was the end of it.”

Garuk looked at him out of the corner of his eye. “You could go desert for a year or two.”

“Or,” Gylepi said, thoughtfully tapping his chin, “I could… not.”
