“It was a red snake,” Gylepi said between breaths, “black head, pale yellow stripes, came out of the toy box.”
If Yamin’s face had had any colour in it before Gylepi’s description, there was certainly none left after it.
“What?” the archer asked frantically, hugging his son closer to his chest as Yamin sent the healing house into a hive of activity, pointing at some of the women, beckoning others over, shooing others away to fetch water and anything else. She turned briefly back to Gylepi and jerked her head, urging him to follow her into one of the side rooms.
Gylepi could feel his heart sinking as he ducked behind the heavy curtain and lay his son tenderly on the mattress. The side rooms were reserved for the dying, and now Ruyn was in here.
He hugged one arm around himself, holding his other hand up to chew on his fingernails. He was dimly aware of a cool hand taking his elbow and leading him out of the side room, then patting him twice on the back before disappearing again.
“Ruyn…” he whispered, balling his hands into fists to try and keep them from shaking. He rested his back against the wall, his legs suddenly aching from the adrenaline-spurred run over here from his house by the river. He let them cave in under him, sliding his back down the wall until he was sitting on the cool stone floor.
He looked over at the door as one of the healers dashed out, snatched a bottle from the shelf, then darted back in again, not even looking at him sitting there on the floor.
He rested his forehead in his fists, trying to concentrate on keeping them from shaking.
A shadow appeared on the floor in front of him, then a hush of fabric as one of the healers sat down beside him, resting an arm comfortingly on his shoulders.
Gylepi took a deep but shaky breath. “I have never felt this helpless in my life,” he confided. “I’ve watched my friends die in front of me on missions, but I’ve never had to… He’s five years old.”
He hung his arms loosely over his knees, watching his hands continue to tremble uncontrollably.
“Don’t lose hope, Gylepi,” the healer told him. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he recognised the voice, but he was too worried to put a name to it just yet. “Red and yellow striped, you said?”
The archer nodded without looking up. “With a black head.”
“I’ve seen seven others come in here with bites from that snake, and all but two of them walked right back out five days later.”
Gylepi nodded again. Something about the healer’s tone told him she was keeping something back, but he didn’t want to think about that. Five out of seven people had survived this snake. There was no reason why Ruyn couldn’t make it six from eight. He was a strong boy. He could make it.

Nol, of course, is crown prince, so marrying him would mean becoming queen later on, which sounds cool until you think about it.
And Kaen's just a bastard XD;
*clings~ to poor Gylepi*
