Aari glanced down at her piece of paper, making sure she had the address right before folding it neatly and slipping it back in her handbag. She hooked a few loose strands of hair behind her ear, smoothed the wrinkles in her dress, and approached the two guards with a bright smile.
‘Is this the residence of Kaen of the King’s Own?’ she asked, jut to be certain. She’d never been particularly good with directions.
The guard gave a puzzled frown. ‘Yes, but the Own is not due to return for another three months.’
Aari shook her head dismissively. ‘Oh I know that. I’m wanting to speak with his wife.’
‘Sorry, Ma’am, but Mali is receiving no visitors at the present time.’
Aari frowned and felt her shoulders slouch slightly. ‘Oh… I’m just passing by as a friend. I thought she might like some company since her husband has been gone for so long, and she might be feeling lonely.’
The guard glanced across at his colleague, who shook his head curtly.
‘Please,’ Aari tried one last time. ‘My name is Aari. I’m Gylepi’s wife, so I know how Mali must be feeling right now. I’m trying to get the group of us together, share each other’s burdens and lighten the load. Please. You can’t know how difficult it is for—oh forget it.’
She waved an annoyed hand at the guards and turned on her heel, a disgusted frown on her face. Such a male response, or lack thereof. The men down at the pub were the same.
‘Why would you feel lonely, little lady? You’ve still got your kids with you, and your man’s off saving the kingdom! You should be proud of him! Nothing to worry your pretty little head over. He’s riding a horse. He’s one of the best archers in the kingdom, and he rides with the King’s Own.’
‘They’re still human,’ Aari muttered, kicking at a pebble as she strode onwards, ‘And so are we.’
‘Well then,’ said one of the men in her memories, ‘If you’re so lonely for your man, why not find comfort in another?’
She stopped and tipped her head back to squint up at the clear blue sky, shading her eyes against the sun as they began to pool with tears. Even the wide expanse of blue didn’t connect her to him now. He was well and truly into Kazin by now, and from what little he’d told her, the sky over his head would be thick with dark, claustrophobic clouds, and even that would be hard to see through the dense trees, taller even than the palace.
Aari took a deep breath and squared her shoulders in a vain attempt to calm herself. Hard as it was, she had to be strong, for the kids if not for herself.
‘I’m so sorry, Mali,’ she whispered back down the road. ‘If you ever have the need, any one of us is more than willing to hold you.’

She'll be able to get the other ladies--the worst of the other married bois is Anganur, and he's laaaaazy, not domineering XD So his wife, who is as yet unnamed, will prolly get ideas from the rest of the girls and teach her boy a thing or two when he got home XDDD
