Melraan thudded back against the door with a clatter or wood and steel. His quiver dug painfully into his shoulder blades and his belt was twisted uncomfortably around his sword sheath, but he couldn’t help standing there for a few moments. The entrance hall to his home never looked so beautiful and inviting as on the day he returned from a mission.
‘Guess who!’ he called into the house. Even after the massage at the palace, he could still hear the fatigue in his voice after months on the road. He unclipped his sword and dagger and dumped his assorted weaponry on the floor, then slouched towards the kitchen.
Aelen and his daughter Rair were sitting at the table, both with wide, devilish grins. Melraan’s eyes dropped to the empty bowls they were presenting him with, then over to the bowl of washing up water over the stove and finally back to Aelen’s grinning face. He folded his arms and rested a shoulder against the door frame, eyebrows half raised.
‘Just in time for the dishes,’ Aelen said cheerily, as though the subject needed any further emphasis.
Rair was doing her very best not to burst into a fit of giggles. ‘Welcome home, Daddy!’
‘You two are a pair of evil, evil women,’ Melraan accused them, pushing away from the wall and slumping down in his chair at the table. He hung his head back and closed his eyes. ‘I could have died, you know.’ He shook a finger to emphasise his own point.
‘Pfft,’ Aelen snorted. ‘My man, killing himself on a few dozen Kazinians? How rude!’
The swordsman snorted this time. ‘Seventy-nine,’ he corrected. He realised there had been no noise of scraping chairs or bowls landing back on the table, and so pointed his finger in what he hoped was a Rair-ish direction. ‘No.’
‘Aww.’ Melraan could see her shoulders slouch in his mind’s eye.
‘Up you get, Kiddo,’ Aelen said with a resigned sigh. There was scraping of chairs as mother and daughter stood up, and Rair pulled the chair over to the washing basin so she could reach it.
Aelen’s arms snaked around his shoulders, and her lips pressed against his. ‘Missed you.’
‘You too,’ Melraan answered, realising now that he couldn’t actually open his eyes if he’d told them to.
‘You want lunch or did they feed you at the palace?’
Melraan shook his head. ‘Starving, now you mention it.’
She kissed him again and unwound her arms. He could hear her light footsteps as she moved over to the stove, then quiet clanging as she poked the pots there. ‘Chicken soup okay?’
Melraan’s eyes snapped open and he stared, mortified, at the ceiling. It’s okay, he told himself, It’s not Nol’s chicken soup. Aelen can cook.
‘Mel?’
‘You’re an evil, evil woman,’ he said again, rolling his head forward to force a decidedly weak glare on her.
Aelen gave her painfully sweet smile as she spooned the soup into a bowl. ‘I know.’
