Queen Kuluni folded her arms, biting her lip as she stared at the map in thought. ‘I don’t see why we have to send so many up there. They’re hardly up against the might of the Kazinian army, are they?’

The First General shook his head. ‘When an armed Raykinian is in Kazin,’ he clarified, the words rolling in his thick desert accent, ‘he is always against the Kazinian army.’

‘True enough,’ Kuluni agreed, ‘but if there are only a small number up there, then are they likely to even be noticed?’ She looked down at the map on the table, mentally calculating the distance from the Raykinian border to Sissillya. ‘Surely they could clear the area of bandits with a small number.’

‘I disagree.’

The Queen held back a sigh. She knew he would. Why her parents had put up with this man, let alone promoted him in the first place, Kuluni couldn’t know. He seemed to forget who actually ran the country.

‘The problem,’ the General continued, ‘is not the bandits, rather the army patrols that Sissillya has. If they so much as catch a whisper of one Raykinian warrior in their lands, they will all converge at once. We need as many of our forces up there as we can spare.’

‘And you’re proposing the whole of First and Second Company.’

‘I am. Sissillya’s army stands at around five hundred men. On their home soil, we need at least one and a half times that.’

Kuluni was about ready to strangle him in frustration. She clenched and unclenched her fingers behind the table to stop herself from doing just that. ‘We aren’t fighting the whole of the Sissillyan army. We are fighting untrained, disorganised, small groups of bandits. If we only send a small number up there, of the very best warriors we have, then they should be able to dispatch the untrained, disorganised, small groups of bandits quite easily, as well as any Sissillyan patrols they may encounter.’

The scar on the General’s face was beginning to twist like a pale snake waking up. ‘If one single man from the patrols escaped—’

‘Well then, we’ll make sure they won’t.’

The tall man stared down at the map, his brow creased in deep thought, twisting the pale snake further. He wasn’t considering her plan though; Kuluni knew him better than that. He was thinking how best to avoid it and have the attack go to his plans, as usual.

‘How many would you consider a small number?’ he asked, his eyes flicking over the map. ‘A hundred?’

‘How big are these patrols?’

She could see confusion creep into his face. ‘Usually between ten and twenty.’

‘Then I want fifteen.’ Kuluni couldn’t help but grin at the mixed look of horror and outrage the General flashed up at her. ‘The fifteen best in Raykin. If they can come back, all alive, in four months, then they will stay. They will be my warriors, General Yannan, not yours.’
