Bouquet ~ Eight

Chapter~ 889 (yeah I know, piffly little one, this)
Total~ 13 444

‘Morning.’

‘Mfrgle…’ Sheena yawned widely and drew herself into a sitting position, staring down longingly at her desk. She rolled her shoulders and neck around to try and work some of the fatigue away, but the desk was still looking like a particularly inviting pillow.

‘Late night?’ Sadi asked, grabbing a chair opposite her and plonking down to stare up into her eyes and try to get some conscious thought out of her.

Sheena sniffed and nodded, rubbing one eye with the heel of her palm. ‘I think I’m coming down with something. It took me ages to get to sleep last night. The frogs kept me awake for I don’t know how long, then a gods-damned crow thought it would be fun to sit on my windowsill and yell in my ear to wake me up this morning.’

‘Aww, poor baby.’ Sadi patted her affectionately on the head. ‘It’s called hay fever. It does the rounds this time every year.’

Sheena shook her head. ‘I don’t get hay fever. This is different.’

Sadi shrugged. ‘You’ll get over it. Where’s Lexa?’

‘She hasn’t turned up yet. Three of the other girls are off today as well, and I swear I was this close to staying in bed too.’ She pinched the air with thumb and forefinger.

Sadi snorted. ‘Lazy buggers. Okay, I’ll just have to tell you then.’

The diplomat looked up with slightly more wakeful eyes. ‘Ooh, developments?’

‘Mhmm,’ the investigator said with a nod. ‘Well, not on Suza’s Saviour, but the Golden Kris girls found something at last night’s killing. I assume you heard?’

‘The queen’s advisor, yeah.’ She cringed. ‘She’s about ready to sack the entire advisory panel now, and do everything herself.’

Sadi snorted again and shook her head. ‘That’d be right. She’ll cool down eventually. Anyway, developments! The girls found a strawberry blond hair at the victim’s house.’

Sheena slowly raised her eyebrows in disdain. ‘Well, good for them. They’ve narrowed it down to half the population of Suza.’

The investigator shrugged and rested back in her chair. ‘Well, the Golden girls are excited. They think it narrows it down significantly. They might even have a few suspects soon.’

‘Sadi, dear, half of Suza has strawberry blond hair. I have strawberry blonde hair. And I have big feet. Oh my gods above, I’m the Golden Kris!’

Sadi laughed at the over-done sincerity on her friend’s face. ‘You’re an idiot. And you’re just jealous because you’re still stuck in the diplomacy.’ She poked her tongue out, then crossed her arms and legs, sticking her nose up in a superior manner.

Sheena hid a giggle behind her hand. ‘Oh, very mature, oh supreme ruler investigator type person. How goes your search, by the way?’

Sadi shrugged and returned to a more natural seating position. ‘Nothing as of yesterday. We’re working on getting handwriting samples from everyone who works in the palace, see if we can match it to the notes, but I can’t see that working. I mean, she could easily change her handwriting for the notes so she wouldn’t get it matched up.’

‘I still say you should swap notes with the Golden girls.’

Sadi shook her head. ‘Tried that. They’re definitely different people. The Golden Kris is a hired assassin, which we know because he writes on his calling card how much the victim’s life was “worth” to him, but Suza’s Saviour works for herself. Or for the whole of Suza, as she likes to think. She doesn’t make any money from her killings, anyway, so she’s probably got another job inside the palace where she can snoop around and find out who’s corrupt, then pop around to their house and knock them off.’

‘Charming.’

‘Oh, I know.’ Sadi frowned at her friend. ‘You look like you need a break. Would you like to go with me to pester the kitchens about a coffee?’

Sheena grinned through a yawn. ‘I thought you’d never ask.’ She held out her hands so Sadi could drag her to her feet, then mooched towards the door, almost bumping into another investigator, clad in their typical dark brown uniform.

She thrust a piece of paper at Sadi, a wild look in her eyes. ‘We’ve found another one, just now, but she was probably killed last night. That’s the note.’

Sheena shook her head at her friend. ‘You see? If they’re not the same person, they’re definitely working together.’ She craned her neck over to read it with Sadi.

‘Look around you; is this the home of a diplomat’s wage? She demanded money from the treasury for the diplomacy, but kept most of it herself. This woman was corrupt.’

‘The diplomacy?’ Sheena murmured, casting her eyes over the women who had made it in today and seeing the faces of the ones who hadn’t in her mind.

The investigator nodded. ‘Her name was Lexa.’

Sheena shook her head and laughed. ‘No, really, who was it? It’s not Lexa. She’s not corrupt. She’s at home with a bad cold. She’s not corrupt! Who was it, really?’

The investigator spread her hands and shook her head apologetically.

‘Sadi, Lexa wasn’t corrupt.’

Sadi hadn’t moved. Her eyes were still fixed on the note, but she didn’t look like she was seeing it. ‘Lexa, you idiot,’ she whispered.

‘But she wasn’t! She wasn’t corrupt!’

The repeating of "She’s not corrupt" seems to grate on me a little, but I'm not sure why...

But hohum. Nice little chapter =3

so she’s probably got another job inside the palace where she can snoop around and find out who’s corrupt, then pop around to their house and knock them off.’ <- *laughs* Ooooh.... I like this development. Wonder where it'll go.

Her eyes were still fixed on the note, but she didn’t look like she was seeing it. ‘Lexa, you idiot,’ she whispered. <- I am honestly confused as to who is looking at the note and who is whispering. ^-^;;

But that's all I have to pick at. ^-^ (And durnit! I want to write, not read! *twitch* One more chapter. Well, two, to make it a nice even number. *twitch*)

Not that I shall be more useful there...
