Raykinian Alphabet
Jun. 1st, 2010 04:42 pmAs I was redesigning Nolryn's royal regalia I decided I wanted to put some writing on it somewhere. Ended up that I couldn't fit it anywhere and still keep it aesthetically pleasing, but I redesigned the Raykinian alphabet anyway. The previous version I was never happy with, since it looked more like pictograms than actual writing. I've always imagined Raykinian writing to be all squiggly and sort of cursive, so I redid it.

Old one on the left, new one on the right. You'll notice that ae/ay isn't a single letter anymore, because'Narti forgot to make one and was too lazy to do so after uploading this version it's easy enough to stick an A next to an E or Y. Yep. ANYWAY. I've sorta tried to base the letters on what your mouth does to pronounce it, and then gave up and BSed the other ones like B and D.
Notes on pronunciation: T is a bit of a misnomer. It's the sound for the TH in Mithé's name and is much softer than a T. Instead of the tip of your tongue against the top of your mouth, sort of put the middle of your tongue against your teeth to say it, so it's sort of halfway between T and TH.
I and Y are very similar, but basically, Y sounds like it does in 'crystal'. I is just a long Y. Not EE. See how the letter itself is like a stretched out Y? I SMRT. For the other vowels, A as in 'father', E as in 'set', O as in 'hot' (unless you're American, in which case you have no phonetic sound to equal it and I give up on you) and U as in 'full'.
They roll their Rs a bit, hence big wiggly line. Desert people roll it more.
Q is near-enough identical to K, but it softens the vowel after it a bit.
And that's it! Here, have some really bad handwriting :D

Up the top is that saying I wanted to put on Nol's uniform somewhere.
Lin = goddess of water and life. The circle around the L makes it a capital.
Genan = guides, present tense
Nyan = my (also I, me, mine, etc)
Delyn = hand
Tilu = until
Aeia = goddess of the desert and death
Rend-il = takes, future tense. The 'il' goes after to make it future, and before to make it past tense :D
Kala = heart
YEAH~ I made up half those words on the spot cos they sounded/looked pretty.
And some names! Also spelt Ulkar's name with a Q just so you can see how the two letters are actually different: K joins other letters at the top, Q joins at the bottom. Damnit I forgot to capitalise the Ulqar one. Eh, you get the idea.
Also, hee, lisps <3
