Character 100-ish 074: Naraan

AWW YEAH FAVOURITES DAY.

As was best mate blade archery master Niqel earlier, Naraan looking suitably like a dickhead and doing the archers PROUD.

NAME Naraan
WHO IS THIS PERSON Former archer for the King's Own and part-time archery master in the Raykinian army
GENDER Male
AGE deceased, age 35

BRIEF BIO Naraan grew up as a spoiled only child in Ni-Yana's high-class 28th district, the son of another First Company archer, so he was already pretty good with a bow before he started training at 15. He was helping the other boys in his class as much as the archery master was, and was probably already good enough for First Company by, like, fifth year.
His parents set him up with a girl, daughter of family friends who were well-placed in the palace themselves, and they bonded over eye-rolly parents if nothing else. She did quite like the idea of dating an army guy, though, and Naraan found her a fun person to be around as well, so in the end the parents picked them well. Naraan married her at 20 as per tradition, graduated from army training at 22 as per tradition and, unsurprisingly, right into First Company. Less traditionally he took up the Own challenge four months later and bloody got in. He's bloody good, is Naraan.
His first mission was pretty tame but very long, escorting King Mithé and seven-year-old Prince Nolryn on their royal meet-and-greet to meet all the world leaders. Mini!Nol was particularly interested in Naraan's archery and Naraan was quite happy to teach him how to use it. He even bought Nol a child-sized bow on the Kazinian leg of the trip and kept himself and Nol entertained by teaching him about it on the rest of the journey. Naraan has always been somewhat protective of the young prince, and when Nol signed up for army training two years after they got back home, Naraan took on the role of archery master, just for his year level and, of course, not while he was out on active missions. He was very proud when his little protégé became the youngest ever recruit into the Own (and was then eclipsed by Nimay a few months later but eh she's just a swordie).
But then, of course, their first mission together didn't go well. Naraan was shot just barely missing his armour, piercing his lung, and he died two days later.

CHARACTER AWESOME. He just is. Naraan has a very droll, sarcastic sense of humour which he sometimes forgets kids won't understand. Oops. He doesn't hide behind any false masks, doesn't beat around the bush, if he doesn't like you he makes it known. He loves a good laugh, but can be deadly serious on missions, at which point people go 'oh yeah, deadly, forgot that bit.' And by people I mean readers because the Own already knows that, it's why he's bloody there. But yeah. Naraan is awesome

POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Naraan loves kids, but for whatever reason I don't think he has any of his own. Doubt he would have latched onto Nol as he did otherwise.
  • Nihqel, a blade archer in the Own when Naraan rode with them, was his best mate. The friendship continued well after Nihqel was forcibly retired.
  • His favourite meal is a big slab of nira steak, cooked rare over the grill.
  • FAVOURITE OWN RIDER. The more I do with him the more I regret that he was dead before I gave him any character. Literally, throwaway line in a character questions meme for Nol, something about special adult figures outside your family members, I think. He was everything to Nolryn. Mithé was his father, but Naraan was everything else. Mentor, best friend, crazy uncle, idol, normal person in a world of politicians, everything. His death was when shit got real for Nol, and that's why, no matter how much I want him to be there to the bitter end, I can't bring him back.
