Character 100-ish 083: Lady Ramnaré

Yay healer!

Geeze what a boring expression. There was a subtle 'fuck you' in the ref photo that was meant to be the challenge in drawing this one--subtle expressions are hard and I've figured it's time to start working on them in this challenge--annnnd that didn't come across at all. Oh well. This is how we learn.

NAME Lady Ramnaré
WHO IS THIS PERSON Current healer at the palace healing house in Ni-Yana. Yamin's mentor.
GENDER Female
AGE 31

BRIEF BIO Ramnaré grew up in the desert and hated it. She was always questioning everything, not least of all why the elders always insisted on them living in the desert when the riverfolk had so much more. On the day of her hrai-dani, when Ramnaré was officially an adult now and felt her opinions should be heard rather than just swatted aside, the elders decided she was too much against the grain of the family, and threw her out.
Ramnaré didn't argue, and was happy to leave to make a real life for herself in the city of Ni-Mythaa. She maintains now that it was her choice to leave, but yyyeeeah she was thrown out. Anyway. Her first impressions in Ni-Mythaa weren't great. She started living as a thief, purely because she had little idea about how the city worked, only her own idealised visions of where she'd be, not how she was going to get there. After a month or so she was assaulted just for being a desert person, she fought back as well as she could, which was well enough having grown up having to fight in the desert, but she still ended up in a healing house.
By then Ramnaré had had it with Ni-Mythaa and hitched a ride downstream to Ni-Yana instead. The healing house in Ni-Mythaa had given her the idea to start training to be a healer herself. She moved into a share-house of young ladies--another healer, a carpenter's apprentice and a chef at the palace. She started training a bit with the army at the same time, just for self-defence.
The share-house, though, started to grow a little too small for her, because she'd fallen in love with the chef, Ika. The two of them moved into their own house after three years, but Ramnaré was insistent on being Ika's equal before they would marry. She earned her gold healer's band at 28 and married Ika shortly after.

CHARACTER Ramnaré is very outspoken and stubborn, though she has a greater respect for authority now than she did as a teenager. She'll rarely ever ask for help, and won't accept it if offered either. By the same token, she never offers her own help, either, more because she figures other people will feel just as shamed as she does. It can all make her seem quite bitter and proud, but when it comes to other desert people, especially those who made the move as she did, she's like an instant sister.

POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Ramnaré specialises in snake bites. Growing up in the desert she already had a fair bit of knowledge about them, and it was this knowledge that got her a place in the healing house at all.
  • Ika sometimes brings food over to the healing house from the palace for dinner just for Ramnaré. At home she loves cooking for her wife.
  • Ramnaré is very protective of her 'White Palm' Yamin. Yamin reminds her of the innocence of her own childhood.

I like her headshot though. There's something about the longness of her neck and the roundness of her hair and face. IT PLEASES ME

I want like fake-sister fics of her and Yamin. I love their friendship so much.
