Birthday character!
Well his brother and sister were screaming in rage, so Kael gets a RAAAAR face too.
NAME Kael
WHO IS THIS PERSON Main character of Blade Archer, my 2004 NaNovel that I finally finished last year (as such this entire profile is therefore spoilers). Kael is a blade archer in the Raykinian army
GENDER Male
AGE 45, but being as he's 15-22 in Blade Archer and I haven't written him anywhere else, he's pictured at about 20.
BRIEF BIO Kael was born way down south of the Main Road in Ni-Yana and grew up there with his older brother and sister, Ynuk and Elara, and their mother. Kael's father died when Kael was a boy, and though the authorities all told them it was a boating accident the family all knows he was murdered. After his death, the three kids all worked out a way of mugging rich drunk people in the city. Elara would woo them into an alley, where Ynuk would grab and hold them while Kael nicked their coin purse.
Kael signed up for army training at 15, after being told by all the people in his local watering hole that he was good enough for it. In the absence of anything better to do, he figured sure why not? There he met Ronanen, a training healer at the palace healing house who took a shine to the bad boy. I think she thought she could change him.
So everything was going well, which of course then means everything goes wrong, and for Kael everything went wrong in a big way. His entire family, minus his big brother Ynuk, was killed in one night. Kael himself would have been killed, too, and probably Ronanen with him but his attacker underestimated the army trainee target and he fended them off.
The reason was that Ynuk, his big brother, had started looking for the people who had killed their father. Clearly he was getting close enough that they tried warning him off by killing everyone close to him. LONG STORY SHORT the brothers teamed up, dragged the mob into the open and got the Talons onto them. Ynuk died in the battle but Kael lived on to graduate into Ninth Company at the end of the year.
Kael and Ronanen married as per tradition, the full moon after Kael's 20th birthday, and since his graduation they've moved in together into a nice middle-class house and moved four or five times since then. They have four kids, none of whom are taking the army route. Kael himself climbed as high as Fourth Company, but started dropping off a few years ago. He's considering retirement now.
CHARACTER I created him to be a nasty pasty because I didn't have any, but I wasn't great at making them at the time and didn't really go far enough. He's still a sniping little dick, can't take a joke and is both very proud and very sensitive about his roots. As a trainee he was very much reliant on his street skills. He figured at the beginning that he already knew everything and didn't bother to learn, then got angry and frustrated when everyone got better than him. He's quick to temper, carries a grudge and doesn't calm down for some time. He loves Ronanen like burning and still doesn't feel worthy of her.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Kael trained with Niloren, who is now the army's First General. They didn't get on well.
On the outside, he's moved on from the events of his traineeship, but Ronanen can still see when the anger and frustration come from his memories and not from what's going on in the present.
