Character 100-ish 124: Melraan
Sep. 9th, 2014 09:53 pmI'm meant to be writing. Shhhhh maybe she won't notice.

Needed a bigger grin really, but nobody else looked like Melraan.
NAME Melraan
WHO IS THIS PERSON Swordsman in the current Raykinian King's Own, the best 15 warriors in the kingdom
GENDER Male
AGE 29
BRIEF BIO Melraan was born and raised in upper-class Ni-Yana as the son of a First Company swordsman. Melraan always looked up to his father and always knew he'd be a swordie. His father started training him early, so Melraan was accepted into army training at 13, two years earlier than most.
His bestie growing up was Aelen, whose father had been friends with Melraan's father for years. They each had a girlfriend/boyfriend or two through their teenage years, but they eventually realised that they were never so happy as when they were in each others' company. One of them--neither is entirely sure who it was any more--jokingly said they might as well marry each other. The other said OMG we totally should. So they did! And they're awesome together.
Melraan graduated into First Company the beginning of the next year, then took up and beat the Own Challenge three years later. Just as he got back from his first mission, his daughter, Rair was born, and they're all one happy awesome family.
CHARACTER Melraan is very casual and loves to have a joke. He hates tense atmospheres and will either try in his own way to lighten them up, or he'll leave if he can see his own methods won't work. He really can't take things seriously.
He has a bad habit of mocking people by imitating them, or by emphasising the last syllable of their name. He learned this from Aelen.
Melraan has a dry, sarcastic sense of humour that people are either going to find very funny or very annoying, most often the former. His sense of humour turns black when he's around the other Own riders—he likes to take bets on kill counts and the like—and it often takes him a few days to readjust to polite society when he returns home from a mission.
Melraan's probably the biggest show-off in the Own, but only when people ask it of him. He revels in an Own challenge, waving his arms to get the crowd cheering and generally having a great time in the spotlight.
Melraan hates feeling useless. He trains hard every day, and allows plenty of time to do housework for Aelen, as well. He'll only allow himself to relax when he feels he's earned it, not because he feels like being lazy.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Holy crap I'm the same age as Melraan.
Melraan was originally created to be the Own-character-who-wasn't-Nimay-or-Nolryn back when I didn't think they'd have a huge part, or at least not individual parts, hence why he's the bog standard norm for the Own.
He's always been fascinated by Nimay's magic, and was especially thrilled when she made it into the King's Own so he could really see what it could do. He has the excitement of a small boy when it comes to magic. He trusts it implicitly, knowing it to be completely under Nimay's control.
On the eve of the border crossing, Melraan gets bored. He hates the silence and complete lack of conversation, though he understands the others' need to prepare. He sees no difference between one side of the border and the other. If anything, everyone else's seriousness sets him on edge much more than the prospect of entering Kazin. It reminds him of the serious aspects of the missions past, the friends he's lost and the faces of the people he's killed.
Melraan remembers every man he's killed. Give him a random number and he'll be able to recite how he died. The same is true for his battle scars. He knows exactly where each one came from, even the non-descript ones.
Melraan doesn't like answering personal questions, especially any about the other Own riders. They make him uncomfortable, but he'll still be his jovial self in not answering.
Not a fan of eggs, mostly because of Nolryn's cooking of them.
Melraan's own signature dish is porridge, which he learned to cook from Aelen. He's been learning recently to do some more interesting stuff but hasn't been game enough to try it without Aelen looking over his shoulder.
Melraan says 'sensational' a lot.

Needed a bigger grin really, but nobody else looked like Melraan.
