NAME Ulkar
WHO IS THIS PERSON Swordsman in the current Raykinian King's Own, the kingdom's best fifteen warriors.
GENDER Male
AGE 33
BRIEF BIO Ulkar was born and raised in a tiny town called Ni-Linalaa, halfway between Ni-Mythaa and the Kazinian border. His parents ran the local pub, which makes them about as important as the town mayor if not more so, and his sister's now taken over from them. But I'm getting ahead of myself. The family business introduced Ulkar to the King's Own, being as they stopped by the pub on every mission, so Ulkar hitched a ride downstream to Ni-Yana when he was 15 so he could start army training.
In his training he was paired with Lolana, and the two became fast friends, always egging each other on and testing each others' weaknesses. They ended up marrying when Ulkar was 20, and both graduated the same year into Second Company. They both jumped up to First within the year, though. Lolana was the first to be offered a chance at the Own challenge, but this was shortly after Gylepi made it in, and she wasn't ready to face that level of ridicule yet, so she turned it down.
Ulkar took up the challenge the next year and made it in, and there was much rejoicing. A few months after his first mission their first son, Theri, was born, then their second son, Yarmi, three years later. Lolana hasn't taken up the Own challenge again under the pretence of needing someone to look after the boys, but really she just doesn't want the fame. They're both happy with this setup =3
CHARACTER Ulkar is the eternal optimist. When he first moved to Ni-Yana as a naïve country boy he had no idea what the big city was like and ended up getting mugged a couple of times. Eve now he'll see the good in anyone, the raincloud in any sunny day (desert, remember, rain is a good thing), and doesn't believe the southern districts are as bad as Rumal keeps saying they are.
Ulkar will always be a country boy at heart. He's immensely proud of his tiny hometown and needs little persuading to tell people how fantastic it is and how local Ni-Yana residents have missed out on their childhood.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Ulkar's upbringing in the country has ingrained into him the awareness of every coin he spends in case of drought, plague or the like. He hates unnecessary spending and throwing things away that are still working. He'll likely never get used to having as much money as the Own gives him.
On the eve of the border crossing, Ulkar runs a sort of mantra over in his head, emphasising each one with a gentle nod. I'm not going to die, I'm going to live this out, we're coming back alive.
Ulkar believes magic is no different from any other tool, and that it is completely controlled by the user. If the person is trustworthy, then the magic is, too.
The humidity in northern Kazin makes him feel particularly claustrophobic.
Ulkar is one of the first to rise on missions.
Ulkar is a shortarse. Lolana is typically desert height. They both like to joke that he's boob height on her.
Ulkar still has his country boy accent despite having lived half his life now in the city. It has faded just barely so that only those from Ni-Linalaa would ever notice, but as soon as he goes back his accent's back in full force anyway.
