The young prince carefully inspected the food that had been arranged with obvious care on his plate. Curls of translucent, dusty-pink fish, apparently raw, had been laid in a precise bouquet to one side, with leaves of seaweed speckled throughout. Nolryn couldn’t be sure whether it was supposed to be a garnish or if he was actually supposed to eat it.
A dark brown, oily liquid had been poured into a small bowl on the other side of the plate.
He glanced up momentarily; apparently none of the other diners, his father included, saw any problem with the fact their meat was uncooked.
The Raykinian king noticed the hesitant look on his son’s face. “It’s salmon, Nolryn. You like salmon, don’t you?”
Nol nodded awkwardly. “It’s supposed to be cooked though.”
“This is how the Tsaythis eat it. They can’t build fires on their boats, and any wood they get they use to make more boats. There’s no sense in burning it to cook something that tastes just as good raw.” Mithé slipped another piece of soy-dipped sashimi in his mouth.
“But we’re in Llayad,” the young prince pointed out, “Why are we eating Tsaythi food in Llayad?”
“We have Llayan and Kazinian food on occasions at home. Our visit is a special occasion for the Llayans.”
Nolryn nodded mutely, staring at the raw fish on his plate. He sighed quietly to himself and picked up a strip of sashimi on his fork. He felt as though the whole room were watching him as he chewed on the uncooked meat. It felt strange in his mouth, cold and slimy in contrast to the warm, charcoaled meat he was accustomed to. As far as taste went though, it wasn’t as bad as he had expected.
“Do you like it?” Mithé asked him.
The prince frowned and swallowed the salmon. “I think so,” he answered finally, “I still prefer it cooked though.”
The king bent down to whisper in his ear. “Me too.”
