It had been an unusually busy day in the healing house, so that Yamin had found herself sending a messenger boy off to find more healers who would otherwise have had a day off. Now that most of the palace workers had returned home and the number of patients had dwindled to a more manageable number, the palace’s head healer was able to send the extra healers home and relax against the back wall with the two healers who would be staying with her until the sun set.
Nanuka, the woman who had taken Yamin under her wing when she had first arrived at the palace more than a decade ago, raised her arms in weak celebration.
“They’re gone!” she declared feebly, “My feet will be worn to the ankles if I have to work another day like that tomorrow.”
“Was there a fight or something in the southern districts?” Menala asked, settling herself against the wall and wriggling her toes free of her sandals.
Yamin nodded grimly. In hindsight, she remembered hearing shouting from beyond the palace walls earlier that day, before the masses began to swarm into the healing house.
“Southerners,” Nanuka muttered, then glanced down at Yamin’s wrist, frowning thoughtfully. “That stone of yours can’t banish fatigue, can it?”
Yamin laughed and shook her head. It wasn’t so much that the stone couldn’t do it, but ridding a person of fatigue took more out of her than ridding them of thrai venom.
“Fair enough,” the older healer conceded, smiling and sighing contentedly.
The three healers rested silently for a moment, enjoying the feel of air on the soles of their feet in place of hard stone floor.
Menala was the one to break the silence. “So, Nanuka,” she began lazily, though Yamin could detect the hint of roguishness in the younger girl’s voice.
“Hmm?” Yamin grinned faintly to herself. The tone of Nanuka’s voice suggested she heard it too.
“Who do you like?”
The two older healers exchanged glances, knowing exactly what the girl was talking about. Since the Own had returned from Kazin two weeks ago, she’d been asking every healer in the healing house who their favourite was.
Nanuka closed her eyes again. “I’m married, Menala,” she answered patiently.
Yamin heard Menala shift her shoulders in a shrug. “He’s not here, and you have to like someone. I promise I won’t tell,” she added, as though this would make all the difference.
Nanuka sighed in resignation. “Emon’s a sweetie,” she answered finally.
“I like Nolryn.” Menala sighed wistfully, causing her companions to both snicker quietly. “What?” the young healer demanded.
Yamin smiled knowingly and shook her head, waiting for Nanuka to put her thoughts into words.
“Menala my dear,” Nanuka said sympathetically, “You have as much chance with that one as you would of making a snowball in this kingdom.”
The young healer shrugged again and settled back against the wall. “I can dream.”
Both healers laughed openly this time. “Dream away, sweetheart,” Nanuka laughed.
