Nimay hefted the small rock in her right hand and idly twisted the palm frond in her left, looking as bored as was humanly possible. Religious holidays had never been her thing. Or at least, she was pretty sure they never were. Not from the six years of her life she could remember, anyway.

She looked incredulously up at the priestess who had handed her the objects, but she paid her no mind. She rested her back against the wall, still hefting rock and twisting palm frond. ‘This is pointless,’ she thought to herself.

“This is pointless.”

Nimay turned her head to the sound of Nolryn’s voice, her face showing she wholeheartedly agreed with him.

“I am one of if not the least religious person in this kingdom,” the prince complained, sliding down the wall and dumping his own rock and palm frond in the dust. “Lin would probably be happier to leave the leaves on the trees, and Aeia probably doesn’t think her desert needs redecorating.” He sighed and looked up at the sky, hands clasped in something resembling a religious gesture. “Girls, if you exist, you will make it rain so we won’t have to go anywhere.”

Nimay grinned and squinted up at the sky: a sum total of two puffy white clouds drifted through the great expanse of blue. She glanced down at the prince, eyebrows raised in expectation.

Nolryn looked back up at her, shading his eyes from the sun with one hand. “You know, for the first day of Winter, this is pretty weak.” His eyes brightened suddenly. “You don’t think you could make it rain, do you?”

The swordswoman-in-training blinked slowly.

Nolryn shrugged. “I figured it was too much to hope for.”

King Mithé chose that moment to round the corner. “I trust the two of you are ready?”

“As ever,” the prince replied, getting to his feet. “First thing I do when I’m king is to abolish religious holidays,” he muttered.

Nimay just grinned.
