Nolryn dropped down on the seat opposite Nimay, setting three glasses on the table. One was filled with a bright green liquid, one with mellow orange and the third with pink on the bottom layer and something clear on top. The green one he pushed towards Nimay and the pink one to Melraan, leaving the orange one for himself.

“I don’t know if this will work,” he apologised in advance, “but they were five gold apiece so here’s hoping.” He lifted his glass to clink with the other two.

Nimay held up her glowing green glass tentatively, a worried question in her eyes.

“Honeydew melon liqueur,” the prince answered, nodding towards the glass in Nimay’s hand, “Melraan’s is watermelon, and mine’s mango.”

Melraan shrugged. “Could be interesting,” he said, mixing the two liquids in his glass together with the steel rod stuck into it.

Nimay took a sip of her bright green drink, nodding with approval.

“There’s actually a fair bit of alcohol in this thing,” Melraan agreed.

“Not as much as a Liquid Sunset, but it certainly explains why their beer is so weak. Nobody in their right mind would drink that if they’ve got mango liqueur.”

“Bit expensive though.”

The prince shrugged. “With the ‘Thrai two months away, I’m willing to pay. It’s probably cheaper for the locals anyway.”

“They need more of it in the mountains. Booze made from rose petals or potatoes really doesn’t work for me. Who makes liquor out of rose petals?”

Nimay rubbed her arms as though she was cold. The liquors of the southern part of the kingdom were supposed to warm the drinker up.

Melraan snorted. “That’s what they tell you. It’s obviously just there to see how much alcohol they can fit in one glass.” He turned when someone tapped him on the shoulder.

“Bit strong for you, is it?” the Kazinian woman jested in hissy Raykinian.

All three Raykinians snorted this time. “We’re Raykinian,” Nol reminded her, “we live for copious amounts of alcohol.”

“We just like it to taste good at the same time,” Melraan added.

Nimay raised her glass in agreement.

The Kazinian woman laughed. “I’d drink to that. Mountain people are a bit odd anyway,” she told them candidly.

Nimay grinned and sipped again at her melon liqueur. There were at least some good aspects of this kingdom.
