Lynnlita closed her eyes and turned her face to the sky, staring at the back of her eyelids as the changed red and black in the dappled sunlight. She breathed in deeply and smiled at the array of floral scents that danced in her nostrils. The music of a hundred kinds of birds filtered pleasantly through the hushing trees, backed by the ever-present sound of the river running by the castle.

“Spring has always been Lynnlita’s favourite season,” she sighed wistfully, resting back on the garden bench.

“Could the reason partly be that Spring is the season of her love’s birthday?” Though her eyes were closed, Lynnlita could hear the smirk in her older sister’s voice.

She grinned playfully. “Partly,” she agreed.

The two sisters lay in relative silence for a time, listening to the music of Spring, like an orchestra tuning their instruments—a tuneless, unplanned noise, but beautiful and soothing nonetheless.

“Ah!” The exclamation made Amyrallyn sit up abruptly, though Lynnlita completed the action with considerably more decorum, swinging her legs down and smoothing her skirts.

“Just when Lasinio could not have thought the day could possibly be any more perfect, but the most beautiful jewel in Llayad appears before him.” The brown-haired man swept into the garden and bent to one knee beside Amyrallyn, taking her hand and kissing it lightly as his dark green cloak fluttered and settled on the grass behind him.

Lynnlita sighed wistfully at her older sister’s swooning. If only her own prince could charm her like that, just one day…

Lasinio, still on one knee, whisked a sprig of delicate pink cherry blossoms from his swirling cloak. “Lasinio had imagined these to be a most appropriate gift on such a fine day,” he lamented, “but he sees now that they pale in comparison to their recipient.”

“Leave the flattery, Lasinio,” Amyrallyn laughed, though she was clearly enjoying it, “They’re beautiful.” She took the sprig from Lasinio’s hand, pink and white petals fluttering down in a shower of confetti. She picked one flower off and set it in her hair, then patted the bench beside her. “Sit, Lasinio.”

Lynnlita scoffed quietly behind her hand. “Amyrallyn speaks to him as though he were a trained puppy,” she giggled.

“Oh, but he is,” the older girl said with a wink, patting her pet on the head as he settled himself beside her. “Now, would Lynnlita mind leaving her dear sister and her puppy in privacy?”

The younger girl grinned and stood up. “Certainly,” she replied, giving a flowery curtsey before floating away from the garden. This would be the perfect time to finish her novel, if nothing else.

She glanced briefly over her shoulder before allowing the couple to pass out of her view, but they were still just talking. She shook her head and gave a heavy sigh, resting her head against a tree as a breeze made another shower of pink petals. Some day, that would be her and her prince.
