The waiting archers applauded the prince as he jumped down from the final step that led up to the top of the palace’s outer wall.

“Not bad,” Gylepi told him, “for your first Summer Solstice speech.”

Nol shrugged. “We try,” he said modestly. “I was staring at the Aeia-damned food table the whole time though.”

Gylepi and Garuk exchanged glances. “I kinda had that one picked already,” Garuk said through a grin.

The prince began picking his way through the crowd of people who gathered annually in the palace grounds. “Honestly though, it’d be nice if people could at least hold off until we’re finished talking. Not exactly the easiest thing in the world, getting up and talking in front of four-thousand-odd people.”

“Maybe you should do it after a tankard or two of Liquid Sunset,” Gylepi suggested, “Seems to work wonders on your confidence at the ‘Thrai.”

“Not so good for the actual talking bit, though.”

“I don’t know about that,” the taller archer grinned, “It’d make everyone listen, if nothing else.”

The archers finally burst out of the crowd, who were now descending even more quickly on the food tables, and into the palace’s main hall, where Nolryn closed the door firmly behind them and rested back against the polished mahogany surface.

“Well, that was painless.”

Garuk shuddered. “Why is that the only exit from this building?”

The prince shrugged. “Bit of an oversight, I guess. You can get out at the bottom of the twins’ towers, but that wouldn’t be any better than this door, really. That, and I believe they’ve locked those doors for the day, anyway.” He pushed himself away from the main doors and made for the stairs.

“I’m going to get changed,” he announced, hitching up his ceremonial robes as he started climbing the comparative mountain of steps to his room. “You know where the bar is, and the kitchens might have some scraps left if you don’t want to brave the crowd.”

Garuk and Gylepi glanced back at the heavy doors, beyond which they could hear the rabble of commoners invading what they liked to think of as being their turf.

“I don’t suppose there’s any chance of a quiet day’s training?” Garuk mumbled hopefully.

Gylepi shook his head and began walking to the kitchens. “Not a chance. Come on, I’m hungry.”
