“Hey ‘may, I don’t suppose that yrae stone of yours could give us a nice quick fire, could it?”

“Ooh yeah, and with wet wood! That would be so handy in Kazin.”

It had sounded simple enough last night when Melraan had suggested it, after slaving over his pair of sticks trying to get enough heat from them to start the evening’s campfire. She’d shrugged and nodded, planning on flicking a fire into action tonight. After all, she was already able to create her little dancing blue lights, and that was half a fire already.

Only now did she realise how basic those little blue lights really were. She knew she had no control over them once they left her fingertips, but she thought she might at least be able to aim them at a pile of sticks and get them to catch.

No such luck. Unlike the sparks of fire, these points of blue seemed to repel themselves away from the sticks, floating happily up into the darkness before disappearing amongst the stars.

Finally though, after much coaxing and scratched fingers from sticking her fingers inside a small spinifex clump, she’d managed to catch a spark of blue light on the bush. She grinned broadly and gave a self-satisfied nod as the crackling flames began to spread over the sticks of the bush.

True, it did deviate slightly from the traditional bright yellow and orange of a real fire, in that it was bright blue, but apart from that, it was remarkably convincing. The flames crept along each stalk, curling it and turning it to black charcoal just like real fire. Grey smoke floated up into the air from the bush, interspersed with blue flecks of sparks, just like a real fire. It even smelt of burning spinifex, and popped and cracked like real fire.

There was just one slight problem.

“Ooh,” Melraan oohed, sauntering over to inspect Nimay’s creation, “It’s a bit… blue.” He lifted his head, following one of the sparks as it rose from the now blazing spinifex bush.

Nimay nodded and sighed, then stuck her hand into the flames. She could see Melraan jump out of the corner of her eye, but he relaxed when he realised that the magical inferno had no heat whatsoever. He squatted down beside Nimay’s fire, reaching his own hand tentatively into the flames.

“It’s also stone cold,” he noted intelligently, twisting his hand around in the small blue inferno. Finally he shook his head and stood back up again, watching the burning spinifex as though it was a bizarre new animal with five legs. Either that, or like it was a cold, blue fire. “That’s just bizarre, really, really bizarre.” He dusted the ash from his fingers and slapped Nimay on the back. “Well, you’re getting there. I’m sure it’ll be hot by the time we get to Kazin, right?”

Nimay groaned and fell back in the sand, watching her cold blue sparks dance merrily up into the stars.
