Even as Lynnlita just stepped into the bathroom, she could feel the aches and tension slide from her body. It had been so long since she’d had a real bath, much too long for her liking. It had taken two months of travel just to reach Ni-Yana, and for the last few weeks of that travel, she’d been aching so much for a bath. When she’d arrived in the Raykinian capital though, she’d been devastated to discover that Raykinians bathed in public baths. There weren’t even any exceptions made for royalty!
And so for two months over there, she’d bathed as infrequently as she dared, and felt incredibly uncomfortable and self conscious when she did so, even when the baths were empty but for herself.
There were few towns on the way back up to Kilyad, either. Most Llayans lived in the north of the kingdom, where there was higher rainfall and lower temperatures. As a result, she’d had to bathe in cramped baths that she could barely stretch her legs out in, let alone lie down in.
Tonight then, tonight was her first real, royal, Llayan bath in six months.
Lynnlita breathed in deeply, catching the delicate fragrance of the pink and white rose petals that were scattered around the bath, and in the steaming hot water that melted her bones just thinking about it.
She smiled tiredly as she looked in the bathroom mirror and carefully picked out her hair clips and earrings, laying them by the hand basin.
The rich red of the bathroom walls, flickering golden in the light of no less than thirty candles, reminded her of the rusted kingdom she’d spent two months in. If not for the public baths, she could live there quite contentedly. That would be something she’d have to change when she became queen of the western kingdom. Not necessarily for the whole population, just for royalty, maybe the nobility. Bathing in public just wasn’t right.
She shook her hair out and stepped over to the bath, dropping her travel-dirtied dress to the floor and experimentally dipping one toe into the water. Her grin broadened—even though she’d been absent for half the year, the servants still knew the perfect temperature for her. Bless them.
She eased herself into the steaming water, sighing happily as she sank down under its surface and stretched her legs out to their full length, such a change from the cramped little things she’d been bathing in on the journey home, but complete privacy instead of the small lake of the Raykinian baths. She could feel the sand, dust and sweat of two months of desert travel washing from her skin, even without scrubbing it.
The only sound to reach her ears was the rhythmic sound of her own breathing. She wriggled her toes under the water and closed her eyes, watching the candlelight play on the backs of her eyelids and taking in the delicate scent of the rose petals. Now this was living.
