Mina always hated this part of the walk home. She’d never been mugged herself, but she’d treated plenty of patients, mostly palace staff, who had been attacked on their way to or from work. Rarely did the healers ever become targets, probably because they knew they’d need their services themselves some time, and didn’t want to make enemies of them.

That didn’t stop them from giving Mina dark, envious looks though. She kept her chin held high and didn’t dare make eye contact—just because it rarely happened, she wasn’t about to provoke them into attacking her.

Gradually though, the feeling of being followed came over her. She glanced back over her shoulder to see three youths strolling casually down the street, but whether they were following her or not, she couldn’t tell.

Mina gasped as she faced forwards again. Four more adolescents were walking up the street towards her, all gripping rusted daggers and looking straight at her.

Mina broke into a run, darting down one of the side streets and hoping to the goddesses that she wouldn’t get lost or attacked by someone else. She could hear the running footsteps of all seven of them behind her, echoed by her own frantic paces as she fled through the gaps between the houses here that passed for roads.

The street kids were too fast for her though, and she screamed as one leapt on her and pushed her to the ground, where another two or three jumped her and kept her pinned there. She closed her eyes against tears as another started tugging at the coin purse tied to her belt, struggling to untie the knot.

“Just cut it off!” one of them yelled, shoving the designated thief aside.

Suddenly there was the clean, crisp sound of a sword being unsheathed, and Mina could feel all the kids piled on top of her freeze for a moment, then they started swearing and scrambling to get off, kneeing and elbowing her as they did.

Mina covered her head with her hands, unable to stop crying now. She could hear the clash of steel in front of her, along with a harsh, adult voice and the sobbing voice of one of the children, but she couldn’t hear their words, and didn’t dare look up. One man, with a sword, no less, was far worse than a bunch of kids. All they’d wanted was her coin; this man would probably want more.

She heard the child’s footsteps as he ran away, then the slow, heavy steps of the man as he approached her.

Mina gripped her head tighter, wishing she could sink into the earth. Two metallic sounds reached her ears then: the man sheathing his blade once more, then the chink of her coin purse landing beside her head.

“You shouldn’t walk home alone around here.”

She looked up to see Kurae, one of the riders of the Own, offering her a hand. Screw Rumal. She had a new favourite now.
