As always, Gylepi’s wife Aari was waiting at the front door for him, arms cradling the dozing Ruyn, and a brave smile on her face. Lania was clutching her mother’s skirts, only partly because of the fear inherent in her expression.
When Gylepi reached the bottom of the stairs, the three-year-old pushed away from her mother and ran over to him, falling on the way but picking herself up without shedding a tear.
Gylepi dropped down to her level and set his saddlebags on the floor to catch her in his arms. Her tiny hands grasped tightly around his neck as she buried her face in his shoulder. “Will you be back for my birthday, Daddy?”
“I’ll do my best,” he told her honestly, “See how much taller you can grow before I get back, okay?”
Lania nodded as he stood up, swinging her onto his hip. One leg got caught in his bowstring, but she didn’t seem to mind, just clutched him tighter.
Gylepi smiled encouragingly at his wife’s brave smile and caught her in a one armed hug. Her free arm tried to negotiate the bow and quiver on his back before finally just resting on his shoulder. He closed his eyes and rested his face in her hair, breathing in her scent so he could remember it as best he could.
Aari jerked suddenly, and Gylepi could hear a muffled sob against his shirt. He frowned in slight confusion. Aari had always looked one step away from crying before he left on a mission, but she always managed to keep a brave face for him. He began to pull back to see what was wrong, but she gripped him tighter.
“Don’t go,” she begged, “Please.”
Gylepi instinctively drew his arm further around her, slipping his daughter to the floor so she could take care of Ruyn.
“Please, Gylepi.”
The archer smoothed his hands down Aari’s sleek hair. “I have to.”
“Please,” she begged again, “I have a really bad feeling about this mission. Please don’t go.”
Gylepi forced himself to pull away, then cupped her face in his hands and looked evenly into her eyes. “I’m coming home,” he told her, concentrating on keeping his voice steady. He never liked promising things like that before leaving. He didn’t want her to hold it against him if he didn’t.
Aari threw her arms around him again, ignoring the weaponry on his back and crying into his shirt. “Please don’t go.” She was sounding desperate now, like she knew she had no chance of keeping him from leaving. “I love you too much to lose you.”
Gylepi hugged her tighter and breathed in her scent once more. “I know; that’s why you’re not going to.” He stood hugging her for long minutes, waiting for her to calm down and her breathing to become more even. “I love you.”
Aari’s breath caught in her throat again as he turned to pick up his saddlebags, then ducked through the front door.
