Yamin could feel the faint, pre-dawn light on her eyelids as her mind slowly began to wake up. Normally she would be up by now and heading downstairs to the healing house, but for some reason, this morning, she was just so tired. She didn’t feel as though she’d had any sleep at all, not just last night, but for three or four nights straight.
She yawned widely, wondering if it was worth the effort to roll over and face away from the eastern window. Her limbs felt so heavy they might sink through her bed, and even her eyelids couldn’t be bothered to crack open to see outside at what the time might be. Her jaws still had enough energy to yawn though.
Finally she decided to roll over and turn away from the approaching sun, dragging her arms and legs over with her. Why was she so tired this morning? She hadn’t gone to bed any later than usual last night, had she? It hadn’t been a particularly rough day in the healing house, so why was her body so heavy with fatigue that she felt as though she were lying on the floor instead of her feathered mattress?
She concentrated hard on her eyelids, determined to draw life from them and allow some light in to see how late she’d slept in. Was it dawn yet? Her eyelids quavered to stay open; no, it was still too dark for the sun to have risen yet… but it would be doing so soon, and she still hadn’t moved.
She yawned again, running her previous musings over in her mind again. What had she done yesterday? Woken up, same as ever, floated out of the window down to the healing house… then what? She groaned quietly, not wanting to think anymore. She just wanted sleep.
There was the flapping sound of a sheet of material being pulled aside, and Yamin could feel a draught as someone knelt beside her, cold sweaty hands grasping one of Yamin’s.
“Yamin? Are you awake?” There was anxious hope in Nanuka’s voice, and at the same time Yamin realised she could smell the strong herbs of the healing house. She forced her eyes open another crack—it wasn’t dark because the sun hadn’t yet risen. It was dark because she was in one of the side rooms, reserved for people who the healers didn’t expect to live.
Why in Lin’s sweet name was she in here? Why wouldn’t her mind work fast enough? Why was she so incredibly tired?
Nanuka turned her head back over her shoulder and called out to the healing house. “She’s awake!”
Yamin grinned weakly and yawned again. She was conscious, barely, but she was most certainly not yet awake.
“How are you feeling?” Nanuka asked, still grasping Yamin’s pale hand, but the anxiousness was fading from her now.
Yamin rolled her head against the pillow, trying and failing to hold back another yawn as she gave a reassuring smile.
Nanuka smiled back and nodded, then rested one hand on Yamin’s forehead as she stood up. “You just sleep now. You’ll be fine.”
Thrai victim.
The words suddenly sprung into Yamin’s mind, jolting her into at least semi-wakefulness. That was why she was so exhausted. She’d tried to save a woman from a thrai bite with her yrae stone, but her world had turned black before she’d had a chance to see the outcome.
It took all of her effort to reach out and just brush Nanuka’s skirt, but she gained the older healer’s attention nonetheless.
Nanuka frowned at Yamin’s pained, anxious expression, then realisation dawned on her face and she gave an admiring smile. “She still lives. We couldn’t save her sight, but she lives.”
Yamin dropped her arm against the bed block, her entire body relaxing at the words. She closed her eyes blissfully and smiled, breathing heavily at the exhaustion that still wracked her limbs, but now it was a happy exhaustion. The thrai victim had lived.
