Lii hitched her bag onto her back and made for the door, waving goodbye to Yamin as she did so. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Madame!”

Yamin shook her head, almost looking as though she were hiding a grin, then took the roster down from the back wall and held it out to the trainee.

Lii frowned and took the sheet of parchment. She had indeed been given the day off. She shrugged and handed the paper back, pressing her hands together in thanks. “Thank you, Madame,” she said gratefully, then made once again for the door.

“Surprise!”

“Happy birthday, Lii!”

Lii started in surprise, belatedly plastering a grin on her face. “How did you know?” she demanded of the three grinning healers surrounding her, “I haven’t told anyone!”

Menala shook her head proudly. “I asked you when you first got here, remember?”

“But that was five months ago!”

The younger healer shrugged with false modesty. “I try.”

The other two healers laughed, and Fali slapped her on the back of the head. “You read the birthday list, you mean.”

Menala poked her tongue out. “At least I had the decency to ask her in the first place.”

“Oh yes, shame on me. Are we going?”

“Where are we going?” Lii asked timidly, letting herself be pulled along by the tide of giggling healers.

“You’ll see,” Fali told her ambiguously.

“Very, very exclusive,” Narine added, “the kind of place you should be singing in.”

Lii could feel the blush rising in her cheeks, but she smiled warmly at the praise. “Can we stop by my house on the way? I didn’t bring any money with me.”

“It’s our treat, silly girl,” Narina said with a laugh, “But we’ll stop by your place to change. Plain old healers robes certainly won’t make it through the door to where we’re taking you.”

Lii blushed again, ducking her head this time. “You didn’t have to do anything for me, really.”

The three healers exchanged shocked but amused glances. “What kind of a place is Ni-Badra if you can’t celebrate your own birthday properly?” Menala exclaimed, shaking her head in disbelief. “I’m so glad I’m a big city girl.”

“Likewise,” Narine and Fali said simultaneously, then giggled.

“Oh,” Narine added, “We got you presents, too! But you can’t open them until midnight. You’re lucky it’s your birthday tomorrow, actually: I very nearly kept this for myself.”

Lii grinned, contended to just let her friends chatter away amongst themselves. It had been a big step for her, moving from her comparatively quiet hometown at the mouth of the Ra-Lin and everything that was familiar to her. There were still days when she missed the fresh, cool breeze that rolled in off the sea in the afternoon, and the gentle, constant hushing of the waves rolling up the beach.

She hadn’t been in Ni-Yana for long enough to call it home just yet, but with these girls as her friends, she was certain it wouldn’t take long.
