Gylepi sighed heavily as he swung the door closed behind him. He stood for a moment, rubbing his eyes before kicking his boots off and making his way up the stairs with heavy feet.

Aari was of course in bed already. Gylepi had a feeling she was still awake anyway, but just in case, he took care not to make too much noise as he undressed. He quickly slipped under the covers and laid his head on the pillow with another drawn-out sigh.

“Long day?”

“Mmm.” It came out as more of a groan than Gylepi had intended. He yawned widely and repositioned his head. He knew Aari well enough to know that wasn’t the end of it, but he wasn’t about to answer her question before she’d asked it.

He heard his wife roll over beside him, then felt her fingers as they began running over his scalp. “Talk to me.”

“Nothing to talk about,” he said through another yawn, “Just a late night at the pub. Lost a few coins in dagger toss, nothing major.”

Aari’s fingers ran through his hair for a few moments longer. She didn’t say anything, just hoped that maybe her husband would elaborate, but Gylepi remained silent. She sighed finally, a hint of exasperation in the sound, then rolled back over to her side of the bed. “Night.”

Gylepi slid his eyes open and stared at the wall. She’d find out by tomorrow anyway. Probably best that she heard it from his mouth than once it had been mangled by gossip.

“Some bastard questioned Rumal’s right to be in the Own again. Not a regular at the ‘Thrai, so I doubt he’ll be back again. He was obviously just there to cause trouble.”

“And it worked.”

Gylepi nodded. “It just got out of hand,” he added, realising she couldn’t see him.

Aari was silent for a moment longer, but Gylepi knew that wasn’t the end of it just yet.

“Did you get involved?”

The archer cringed prematurely, but didn’t answer. His silence was answer enough.

“I don’t suppose there was a better way of solving it.” There was a hint of gentle irritation in her voice.

“Probably, but you know how sensitive Rumal is about that, and someone had already joked at him about his scars earlier on.”

“And I know how you get with those types, too.”

The archer’s eyes narrowed as he stared hard at the wall. “I know we have to deal with a lot in Kazin… but we shouldn’t have to deal with it at home as well. You just… you don’t say those things to a man’s face, however many scars he’s got on the back of his wrist.”

Aari shuffled over and started playing with Gylepi’s hair again. “I know,” she said quietly, “You’ve never claimed to be diplomats, but that doesn’t mean you can’t solve it without fists next time, okay? Solve it with a game of dagger toss or something.”

Gylepi smiled. “Yes, dear.”
