Title~ Clean Up
Author~ Annarti

Notes~ ENGL 2503 Exercise 2, Point of View. "Write a first-person narrative in which the 'I' indirectly describes a second character by describing that second character's room or house, front garden or back yard, or car interior." Yes, that's pretty much what I did for the first CREA 1021 assignment, just change it to first person, chop out Nol's presence to cut the word count to 400. However~ I had fun with that last time =D So I decided to do a whole new one instead. Why not? =3 I'll admit I did nick some stuff from the original, but what're they to know?

I rest back against the curving wall of the spiral stair case to catch my breath. Thank the goddesses I rarely ever had to come up here! It’s bad enough having to climb what is essentially five flights of stairs to get to the Aeia-damned room once a month to tidy it, but imagine calling the north tower your own!

I sigh heavily, steel my eyes and hike the remaining hundred-odd steps to the tower room at the top. The heavy oak door creaks as I open it, backwards from the stairs of course so it almost knocks me back down the bottom to start all over again. Just another few stairs from door to room, then I can just flop onto that feather-filled mattress.

The General will never know. How could she? She’s riding off to do battle with the northern kingdom, and of course when she comes back in four or five months’ time, her bed will be perfectly made and unmarked.

I could almost drift off to sleep on that mattress, it’s so soft. Silken sheets too. I would be in envy, but she’s only ever here to use those sheets for six months of the year. The other six she spends sleeping in muddy tents up north. That’s not for me. My own bed suits me well enough.

Finally I manage to drag myself into a sitting position, being greeted first of all by the incredible view of the surrounding city, then more importantly by the veritable landslide of… well… everything she’s got piled on the floor.

I choose to ignore that for the moment though. The view from up here really is incredible. Apart from the outer wall that encloses the palace grounds, the very tops of the two towers are the only rooms from which you can get a view of Ni-Yana. It almost makes the hike up the stairs worth it. Almost. Obviously it works for General Nimay though.

My shoulders slouch as my gaze finally encompasses the room itself. I can’t say I blame her, really. If I’d just received orders that I’d be spending the next half a year in hostile, cold, wet territory, keeping my room tidy for the cleaning lady wouldn’t be the first thing on my mind either.

Some clothes have been thrown back at the clothes chest, but I think that’s more in frustration than in any attempt to clean up. Any paperwork she had to take with her has gone, so I don’t need to worry with that. There’s just the one sheet left, listing everything she had to pack before they left earlier on today.

Everything’s been crossed off, of course. I have to wonder how seriously the riders of the King’s Own take themselves sometimes. The sheet of paper has “horse” listed on it. How in Lin’s sweet name are they going to forget something like that? She’s also drawn little angry faces next to “bow”, “quiver” and “arrows”. Maybe they have to lighten the mood as much as possible before they leave.

‘Okay,’ I mutter to myself, surveying the mess once more, ‘Let’s get this over with.’
