Thali stood nervously before the proprietor of the Golden Thrai, the most expensive, most successful pub in the kingdom. The tavern spared no expense and cut no corners—with the amount of gold coin the place brought in every night, Kal could afford to be lavish with it.

There was a cellar underground that stored all the kegs of beer during the day, and they were only brought upstairs once it had cooled down enough that the precious amber liquid contained within wouldn’t warm up. The more expensive drinks were served in clear glasses, made from white sand all the way from Tsayth. The Liquid Sunset glasses even had solid gold for the handle.

The furniture was all rich Kazinian mahogany, or honey-coloured Llayan willow, and all beautifully crafted by the best carpenters in Raykin.

One of the most important aspects of the bar though, second only to the beer it sold, were the girls who sold it. Curvaceous, witty, playful, high-class but casual, and absolutely gorgeous.

Thali smoothed out an invisible wrinkle in her skirt as Kal scrutinised her, finally giving a small nod.

Thali could feel her shoulders relax just slightly. She’d by no means gotten in yet, but she was that one step closer. At least with the rest of the interview she could control herself somewhat; her appearance she had no control over.

Kal bent down behind the bar, standing up again with two huge, clear glasses in each hand. He jerked his head, inviting her to join him behind the bar.

“Those four over in the corner there have ordered a round of Silver Fang.” He snorted and shook his head as he handed the four glasses to Thali, then gestured for her to follow him down the stairs to the cellar. “You’ve got the floor for the minute, Mantha!”

“Sure thing,” the other girl called back as Thali descended the stairs into one of the most restricted rooms in the kingdom. Even the palace was easier to get into than the cellar of the Golden Thrai!

“This is the Silver Fang here,” Kal told her, slapping one of the wooden kegs with one hand. A snake’s head had been painted on the front, its mouth open and bearing a pair of glittering silver fangs that was the beer’s namesake. “Fill ‘em up.”

Thali nodded, then looked around for a table she could rest the excess glasses on so she could tap the beer, but there were none. Every available space was filled with a beer keg.

“Come on, girl, on with it.”

“Sorry…” Thali mumbled, hesitating a moment before stepping towards the keg of Silver Fang. She held one glass under the tap, then rested one of the glasses in her other hand on the small wooden lever to allow the beer to flow. Once the glass was full, she quickly slid it aside to fill the other one in her grasp. Already the sheer weight of the huge glasses was straining her wrists, but she wouldn’t let Kal see this. She had to get this job!

“It’s the cheapest brew we’ve got,” Kal snorted as he watched her, “for how much you get in the glass, anyway. This lot’ll try to jip you, you can bet your last coin on it, but don’t let them. It’s one gold for a glass, whatever they say to try and change your mind.”

Thali nodded again, concentrating on keeping her grip on the glasses. “Done,” she said finally, taking the filled glasses away from the taps.

Kal nodded and headed back up the stairs, Thali following.

“No, don’t serve them just yet. Sit them on the bar.”

“Hmm? Oh, sure.”

The glasses went through the same scrutiny as Thali herself, being checked they had just the right amount of head, no dribbling down the side of the glass, and certainly not underfilled. ‘Good enough’ was certainly not good enough in this pub.

“Actually…” Kal mused, tapping one finger on the bar as he looked over to the group of four, “I’ll get Mantha to take this lot out. That mob’ll give you a hard time. Ideally I’d like Kama to take them out, but she’s not in for an hour yet.” He waved the waitress over, then sent her on her way.

Thali couldn’t help but feel disheartened by the gesture. She’d worked in many pubs in her life; didn’t he think she could handle a few rough customers?

“You familiar with the Own?” Kal asked her, snapping her from her thoughts.

“How do you mean?”

“Well, would you be able to recognise them by their face, call them by name?”

Thali shrugged. “Most of them, I guess. I’ve seen them leave for missions a couple of times, and my brother took me to see an Own challenge last year. When Nimay got in.”

Kal raised his eyebrows. “You saw her get in?”

The bargirl laughed and shook her head. “Not quite, no. She was against Rumal.”

“Ah, fair enough. How many of them do you know?”

“Well, I know all their names, but I’m not sure I could quite put them to faces just yet.”

“You’ll have to do better than that. I’m sure you know they’re the most regular regulars we get in here. Don’t ever try to overcharge them, however tempting it may be. Believe you me, getting into a tangle with one of those guys is only going to end badly. The number of new girls I’ve had who’ve quit because the Own picked on them since they first tried to overcharge…” The barman shook his head ruefully. “They go through half a keg of Liquid Sunset in a night as it is.”

“Wow.”

“Okay, maybe I exaggerate a bit, but the idea’s there.” Kal grinned and folded his arms, resting his rear against the counter. “Prince Nolryn you always call Highness,” he said sternly, “No matter how many Sunsets he’s had, he’ll remember the next day if you called him by name at any point. If you get to the point where he lets you call him by name, then you get a raise of one gold per hour.”

Thali’s eyes widened, though exactly what at she couldn’t be sure. A whole gold piece extra per hour! Conversing with the King’s Own! Conversing with the prince! And the way Kal was talking… “So have I got the job?”

Kal grinned. “You’ve got a trial shift tomorrow evening. Come in same time again, and if all goes well we’ll get a tailor in the next day to fix you a uniform.”

Thali couldn’t hold her grin in any longer. She clasped her hands and jumped on the spot, squeaking with sheer joy. It may only be a trial shift, but as far as she was concerned, she was in!
