Notes~ Genesis 100. Introducing the riders of the King's Own, starting with Kurae, just cos the word fitted. Swordie-come-chef, very cliquey with the other swordies and very stony-faced to everyone else. He also fancies Yoryl, the ohsogay blade archer of the Own, but no way in hell is he going to show it. Woulda put that in the fic, but he's more chef than he is Yoryl fancier, and Yoryl hasn't been to Assiraz yet (capital of Kazin, where the spice markets are. I really need to do an intro to Kazin fic, don't I? ... Later =P)

Kurae closed his eyes and deeply breathed in the rich, exotic aroma of all the spices lined up in front of him. Why were there no spice markets like this in Ni-Yana? At home, peppercorns were such a luxury item that only four shops sold it, for almost ten times the price up here in Assiraz.

The swordsman took another deep breath, loving how every breath gave him different scents. Cumin, paprika, tumeric, nutmeg and a thousand other spices he couldn’t name. He coughed as the strong scent of chilli powder was felt more than smelt in the back of his throat. A number of the locals nearby laughed at him, but he couldn’t care less. Despite all the Kazinians swarming around the place, the Assiraz spice markets were Kurae’s heaven.

There was, however, one spice in particular that he was after today. He’d been so very tempted to buy some on the last mission up here, but something had stopped him, and he’d regretted it ever since.

Cocoa wasn’t a common spice, even where it was grown in Kazin. It was mixed with hot milk and sugar to make a concoction that would warm the drinker up without getting them drunk in the process—tropical Kazin didn’t need to be warmed up, and those in the mountains were far too fond of their disgusting and ridiculously potent liqueurs made from potatoes and rose petals.

Kurae hadn’t actually tasted a hot chocolate before, but he hoped it would taste better than what the mountains of Kazin had to offer. He might even be able to start experimenting with it, figure out what other spices might add to the flavour.

He hooked his thumbs under his belt, smiling as he sidled along the seemingly endless street of spices, not really paying attention to their names just yet, and certainly not the merchants chirping ‘Hello! Shopping!’ at him as though they were the only Raykinian words they knew.

‘Lin’s blood! Kurae’s smiling!’

‘Of course Kurae’s smiling. He smiles. Just not around lesser beings.’

‘What, like humans?’

‘No, more like archers.’

‘Hey!’

The swordsman rolled his eyes briefly at the two approaching Own riders. He knew the solitude couldn’t last for long, even here.

‘What brings you here?’ he asked, somewhat condescendingly.

‘I need sugar and salt,’ Melraan replied, ‘and Nol’s just here.’

‘Archers tend to do that,’ Kurae noted calmly. ‘You’ll need rice too, in that case.’

Melraan stared at him blankly.

‘What kind of porridge do you plan on making that has rice in it?’ Nolryn asked.

Kurae shook his head with a barely suppressed sigh. ‘No, but it will stop the sugar and salt from clagging up in the humidity.’

‘Right,’ the other swordsman answered, nodding in a way that showed he clearly didn’t understand, then he jerked a thumb at Kurae and turned to the prince. ‘See, you wish you had him on your side. He knows things.’

‘Just let me know if you find any cocoa,’ Kurae muttered.
