THEY'RE REAL THEY'RE ACTUALLY REAL )

THEY'RE REAL THEY EXIST I HAVE MY OWN GODDAMNED YRAE FEATHERS HOLY SHIT THIS IS AMAZING.

They're even the perfect materials! Yan's is all ripply and so, so detailed and delicate, omfg. Yamin's is just SO pearlescent and gorgeous and shimmery. Nimay's is even two toned omg I can't get over it, and it has this gorgeous green/pink lustre inside it that you can see a bit of in the photo but omg it's stunning.

SO PERFECT. I'm in love. I'll take better photos with lighting and everything over the weekend but alskjdghaljksdghas I just have to squee at this because THEY'RE REAL.

So about, what, three years after I decided the yrae stones are now feathers, I've finally designed the said feathers.

These are them )

Actual size for all of them is about 2.5cm tall. Next step is to find someone who can carve these for me. Wish me luck 8D;;;

Flight

So I've uncovered something of a massive plot hole. Like, huge. Part of SH:Gold will involve long distance flying, so I figured that, after eleven years, I'd work out some cruising flight speeds for the girls. Googling has found this reasonably easily, using the average cruising speeds of migratory birds and the larger birds of prey, which is anywhere between 20kph and about 80kph. So, for the twins:

Cruising speed 50kph (or 30mph)
Top speed 90kph (or 55mph)

Also, I dunno what it is that makes birds able to stay aloft for hours, days, freaking MONTHS at a time, but the twins have that because magic, so they can stay aloft for as long as the plot requires them to. Be knackered by the end of it but that's their problem. So let's bring up the map and work some stuff out open up that gaping plot hole.

Flying for, let's be generous and say 10 hours a day. That's 500km. Even from the farthest northern reaches of Kazin, they would easily get them back to Ni-Yana in less than two days. The average large migratory bird generally covers 650-800km in a day, which is more. Even looking at the most piss-weak of migratory birds, they still manage about 160km a day, so again, they'd be home within the week.

Why the frig am I bothering with horses? =| Why all this 'OMG we must know what's happening in Ni-Yana!' stress? All the 'OMG we need to be at [place] before [thing happens] in a week!' Why has Nimay never decided 'Stuff it, I'll just fly there, back for dinner tomorrow boys'? I've always written it off as her being the general, doesn't want to leave her boys for an extended period of time. Except that two freaking days isn't an extended period of time.

Really all I can come up with to explain why she hasn't done this is that if I hadn't thought it was possible, maybe she hadn't, either. She's been able to fly for her entire remembered life, but she's never before had reason to test her long range capabilities. There's no point in reaching Kazin before the rest of the boys on a normal mission, and she wouldn't think of flying home early at the end because boooyyyyys she loves them. She knows flying is significantly faster than horses, but, like me, maybe she hasn't really considered just how much faster. Having never actually tested it before, maybe even she can't grasp that she could fly across two kingdoms in two days. Maybe, once the plot does call for it in Gold, she's just cruising along after a couple of hours and suddenly holy shit red sand why didn't I do this earlier? REGRET AND WASTED OPPORTUNITY AND SO ON.

Do you buy it? I'm not sure I do, but I can't think of another way around it. And if I can't, well, that's a shitload of take it back to the drawing board right there.

I scared.

Also Yan has the same flight speeds because I can't find squat on bat flight speeds and he's fifty times bigger than a bat anyway. So. Whatever. Damnit I was counting on him being weeks away, at least, when shit was going down in Ni-Yana. This is Not Cool.

Redesigning yrae stuff )

Finally, after I decided YEARS ago that the yrae stone is boring and turned it into a feather made of shell, I've gotten around to designing what the thing looks like. Inspired in part by these and in part by, well, everything Raykin. Also~ they have to be relatively easily reproduced because I don't want to have to look up reference every time I draw the damn things.

1-3 and 5 are sort of very loosely based on what the royal insignia currently stands as, but of course that's highly likely to change depending on the yrae feather, so whatever works. I just needed a starting point. Not really sure what I think of these. They might be a bit fiddly and they'll never come out the same unless I check my reference, which I don't want to do for my most drawn characters.

Thennnn moved onto more deserty inspirations. 4 and 9 come from spinifex and yakka plants, spiky desert plants that populate Raykin (they don't really do cacti). I like these! They still look like feathers but with that spiky everything-will-kill-you look that the Aussie--and hence Raykinian--desert has for all its everything. 8, similar idea but with a palm sort of motif as well, only I don't really think that'd be practical to draw time and again. Sketching was easy, but to actually DRAW it would likely be hellish.

6 and 7 are like the wiiinnnnnd and probably 7 is the best of those. They were fun 8D

10 to 12 based sort of on sand dunes. Idk. It was working in my head and I couldn't get it to come out in sketches.

13 to 15 from sand on the beach looks when the tide washes back, leaving the little rivulets in the sand. Desert. Sand. Yep. Also came out kinda like fire on 13 and 15. I love these ones.

So, being as I have three yrae feathers (Yan, Yamin and Nimay) and that the thing is ~*MAGIC*~ I can do whatever the crap I want with it. So I like the spinifex/yakka ones, the wiiiinnnnd and the sand rivulets best. Work with them. The rivulets ones would be easiest to turn into royal iconography and such so that'll be Yan's.

NOTES WOO ANGST! Haela's the second person (first was Yan, of course) to have found an yrae stone. Good on 'er. This was written for school timed assignment thing. What you see here is actually the first draft. I lost the one I actually sent off to SSABSA, which is unfortunate because I actually put a lot of work into that. Meh, it probably sucks now, anyway XD;
