Author~ Annarti

Notes~ Genesis 128. The number of times I almost wrote that he could hear his heart beating for this one is just ridiculous XD; It doesn't beat anymore, 'narti! .-.;;; Anyway, yeah. Takes place a day or two after Yan was brought back to 'life', for want of a better word.
~ ~ ~
Yan lay down on his back, shifting his shoulders in the sand to try and get more comfortable. It was still strange not having to negotiate the huge wings he’d lived with most of his life, and he couldn’t help shifting around as though they were still there. He hooked his fingers behind his head, staring up longingly at the jewel-encrusted expanse of night sky above him.
He’d get back up there sooner or later. There was no way Qewir would have thrown the yrae stone to the Ra-Lin as everyone said he did. He knew Qewir better than that. It would be hidden somewhere, and maybe he would fear to ever touch it himself, but he wouldn’t let such a precious thing be lost to the river’s swift current.
Either way, it was a waste. The yrae stone needed to be in the sky.
Yan closed his eyes and took a deep breath, feeling the wind on his face, ruffling his hair and clothes, watching the rusty orange landscape fly past below him.
His eyes snapped open suddenly as panic washed over him in a wave of sweat and tingling goosebumps. He quickly got to his feet, raking his fingers through his hair and pressing the heels of his palms to his temples. He tried to steady his breathing to calm himself, staring wide-eyed at the sand between his feet, even regretting blinking now.
Gradually, his breathing slowed to a more normal rate, but still he didn’t take his hands from his temples. He could feel fatigue pulling at his eyelids, threatening to pull him from the waking world and into sleep.
‘Aeia,’ he whispered, but not as a curse, never as a curse. ‘Please don’t.’
An answering breeze chilled the back of his neck. ‘You’ll have to sleep sometime.’
Yan’s eyes snapped up again, wildly scanning his surroundings. A shudder ran up his spine when his gaze fell on the indentation in the sand where he’d been lying a few moments ago, and he impulsively paced away from it, fingers touching the scar on his face. It burned with memory.
He needed that stone back. He needed to feel the freedom of flight again. He needed the comfort of its power. He needed to know if it could keep him from falling prey to fatigue.
He hugged himself against the chill of the night and deliberately avoided looking at the place he’d almost fallen asleep, focussing on placing one foot in front of the other and taking a smooth breath with each step. Maybe if he could just keep his mind on that, he could make it to Ni-Qewira without sleeping.
Something niggled at the back of his mind, tempting his eyelids closed and willing his knees to buckle underneath him, but he shook his head and growled quietly at the back of his throat. The breeze blew at the back of his neck again.
‘You’ll have to sleep sometime.’
‘No,’ Yan muttered through clenched teeth. ‘Never again.’
