Yan rested his back against the outside wall of his office, arms folded as he surveyed the excitement and activity that rushed around the palace courtyard. He’d never seen so many people in the palace grounds at once, except when the gates were opened for Summer Solstice. There were only ever five or six healers here at one time, but he’d just seen two groups of green robes walking past, giggling and pointing at the red, blue, purple and orange army shirts strutting around.
A full month, this had been going on for, culminating in the final grand event today. He could have had First and Second Company up in Sissillya by now, but instead he had been forced to sit on his hands and do nothing.
‘Isn’t it exciting, General?’ From anyone else, the question might have been a cheerful one, but coming from Queen Kuluni, there was an underlying threat that it had better be exciting, or face her wrath.
Yan flicked a bored glance down at her, up at the activity across the courtyard, then pushed himself from the wall and reached for his door handle.
‘It is absolutely scintillating,’ he muttered.
‘General.’ The false politeness was gone from her voice now. She was always quick to run out of patience with him.
Yan paused, hand on the handle, and sighed heavily. ‘Sorry Majesty. I can’t get excited at the prospect of losing my best fifteen warriors to a suicide mission.’
Kuluni rested her back against his wall, looking up at him with half-closed eyes. ‘Do you know what I think?’
Yan didn’t say anything, just continued to stare at the door, the excitement of the palace staff growing behind him.
‘You’re more afraid of losing them yourself; when they come back, they won’t be under your control anymore.’
The General’s hand slipped from the door handle with an annoyed sigh. ‘Have you thought this through at all, Majesty?’ he asked, deliberately not admitting that she was at least partially correct. ‘However good they are at eliminating every bandit and warrior that attacks them, they can hardly go unnoticed. Camels are not a common sight in Kazin unless they’re pulling a trading wagon. There are Houses everywhere who demand higher taxes from the Raykinian army. They will be noticed, tracked down, and killed.’
‘Oh, I’ve thought of that already,’ the queen said with an airy wave of her hand. ‘There are only fifteen of them, so they can skirt around the Houses easily enough.’
Yan winced and suppressed another irritated sigh.
‘I have several of the palace stable hands, and a number of others around the city, who are in Sissillya as we speak, selecting the best fifteen mounts they can come across.’
‘Horses,’ Yan said flatly, ‘in the desert.’
‘Primarily in Kazin, I would imagine.’
The General frowned at the door as he mulled this over. ‘How often do you plan on using them?’
‘You have your fifteen-hundred. I’ll do what I will with my fifteen.’
