Nimay’s six weapons masters stood in a line before the group of fifty warriors-in-training. Lining the walls of the barracks were the figures of what seemed to be half the army. They were all murmuring to each other, about what Nimay could only guess. Who would pass and who would not, remembering how they had performed themselves, all those years ago.
“Gentlemen,” the sword master began. He had long given up on singling Nimay out from the others. “Today is the day we begin to sort the boys from the men. You may have previously thought that was the purpose of your hrai-dani, but at least in my division, that means nothing. To be admitted into His Majesty’s army, you are required to win ninety of one hundred points with your weapon of choice, seventy with your sword, and forty with all others. Is this understood?”
Fifty nods moved like a wave through the group.
“Good. Today we will be testing your abilities with the bow.” Nimay’s shoulders slouched as the sword master step back to allow the master of archery to take the floor. She was certain she could even wield a spear with more expertise than a bow.
Nol nudged her and whispered into her ear. “You could always just use magic.”
Nimay gave the prince a withering look before turning her attention back to her archery teacher.
“There will be five areas to be graded on, each worth twenty points,” the master told them, “Quick draw, accuracy, hitting a moving target and firing from both a stationary and moving camel. Those of you who take the bow as your weapon of choice will also have to fire at a moving target from the back of a moving camel.” The archery master grinned and looked directly at Nimay. “No magic is permitted,” he said, drawing amused snorts from the general contingent.
Nimay folded her arms and cast her eyes skyward.
The archery master was still grinning. “Good luck, boys.”
