“Madame Auin?” The voice of the healer sounded very vaguely annoyed.
Auin looked up belatedly from the small bowl she was grinding aloe vera leaves in. She was still getting used to the new address of head healer, having been simply Lady Auin for the past six years. It always took a second or third call for her to remember she was the head healer now, and when someone called for ‘Madame’, they were referring to her.
Her eyes initially held question in them, but at the sight of the bundle of fabric in the healer’s arms, they instantly hardened with resolve.
“Madame,” the woman began again, aware now that she had her superior’s attention, “One of the fishermen found him on the docks this morning. He appears to be perfectly healthy, but there are no Tsaythi boats due in at the harbour today.”
Auin held out her arms to take the tiny, dark-skinned infant. A fine wisp of white hair dusted the top of his lolling, sleeping head. A pained look came into the head healer’s eyes.
It was rumoured that Tsaythi mothers abandoning their newborn infants when the baby’s father had a less than desirable reputation, or was even completely unknown. In Auin’s six years as a healer, she had never actually seen confirmation of the rumour. She had been disinclined to believe a mother would leave her baby to the elements, even if the child’s disreputable parentage would follow it around for the rest of its life.
Auin sighed. “I think it’s safe to assume his parents won’t be coming to claim him,” she noted regretfully, then her face hardened again as she handed the baby back to the healer who had brought him in. “Ladies,” she called, getting the attention of each healer in the room. “We have a new member of our family here.”
She indicated the dark-skinned, white-haired Tsaythi boy, still wrapped in cloth. The healers’ faces all turned pityingly to him, cooing simultaneously.
“Doubtless you will give the baby the same attention you would give your own. This will be good ground training for those of you who are yet you bare a child. Those of you who already have children of your own would to well to help them.” She smiled briefly. “First of all, would anyone care to give the little darling a name?”
