Didn't win the Not-a-NaNo but that's okay because it's not a NaNo. So totally got myself out of that one. In other news, holy crap I am so over assassins now. I must have just about run out of them, surely. How many have I done? This is the fifth of twelve. Goddamnit.
NAME Taios, alias Waratah
WHO IS THIS PERSON One of the current Bouquet, personal assassination squad of the empress of Kazin. Waratah is the Sirrona connection.
GENDER Female
AGE 32
BRIEF BIO Taios grew up as the daughter of an investigator (closest Kazin has to police) in Assiraz. Her mother, however, was one of the maaaaany many crooked investigators. Taios even knew this as a child, but didn't really see much wrong with it--bribery and corruption has always been part of Kazin, so the fact that people had to bribe her mother to get their job done, eh, it just comes with it. They almost see it more like pay or a tip rather than bribery. Anyway, Taios wanted to grow up to be an investigator, and that she did.
Taios quickly rose through the ranks, though bribery as much as anything else, until she was of a high enough level that she started finding out some things about the inner workings of the Kazinian government. In short, she found out about the Bouquet. Nobody else ever, before or since (current events of SH excluded), has found out about the Bouquet without Shizaaqa telling them.
Taios kept this information close to her chest until she had gathered enough of it that she knew she could do some damage with what she knew. Then one day she snuck into the palace, fronted up to Shizaaqa while she knew the empress was alone, and demanded to be allowed into the ranks of the Bouquet or she would expose its existence to the rest of the investigators. Shizaaqa had her thrown to the dungeons, conveniently enough into the cell next to Flannel Flower. Yeah, that was totally deliberate. She left Taios down there for a couple of months before bringing her back up into her throne room. Simple words--'You do not make demands of me'--and Taios was allowed into the Bouquet and shipped off to Sirrona with the new name of Waratah.
Waratah has now been in the Bouquet for four years, and her first few months in the dungeons gave her a high level of respect for the empress. She wasn't just an employer, but Waratah recognised a shrewd knowledge of people in her. She knew what made individuals tick and how to make people obey her. As a result, Waratah was by far the hardest for Yan to turn when he stepped in. Even at the end he couldn't convince her to kill the Sirronan queen, hence Sahid's being conned into it. In the end, the promise of power specifically over the investigators was what brought her to Assiraz, but the rest of the Bouquet doesn't trust her.
CHARACTER Waratah is better than you. She will find out everything about you, about your character, so she knows exactly how to tread on you to inflict the most emotional pain. She loves to have power over people, which was what led her to join the investigators and then upgrade that to the Bouquet. She disdains everyone around her and, again from being an investigator for a good chunk of her life, she's sceptical of everything that goes on around her. She's not one who can easily have her own beliefs swayed.
POINTS OF INTEREST
This is a waratah.
Waratah has a tattoo of two twisted snakes running down her spine. Their heads sit on her shoulders, but being in the comparative cold of Sirrona means she keeps them covered up all the time to stay warm.
Her mother died while she was in the dungeons. The Assiraz connection killed her, but neither of them will ever know it because to her, it was just another contract on a crooked investigator, and Waratah didn't find out herself until years later. Shizaaqa doesn't like her people to have connections she doesn't know about.
Waratah uses ropes and belts to strangle her victims. Blades, people ask questions about. Nobody wonders why a woman has a belt.
Waratah has the distinction among the Bouquet of being the only one not to have been caught. She was dungeoned, but not because she was captured.
