Continuing with the Not-a-NaNo, which I'll be officially ditching and turning into the Character 100-ish from January 1 regardless. At that point, anyone leftover will just get chucked in with the rest and appear when they appear. Randomly drawing names of un(der)developed characters and developing them!

Old guys are the best to draw, I kid you not. He was judging me the entire time I was drawing him, though. Look at him. He's still judging me. And you, too.

NAME King Keldirande of Llayad
WHO IS THIS PERSON ... the clue's in the name, guys. Llayad is the kingdom to the west of Raykin. He's also Lynnlita's father, obviously.
GENDER Male
AGE 70

BRIEF BIO Keldirande was the second of four children, and so never took all that much interest in ruling. That was his older sister's domain, though he would sit in on sessions occasionally with her and his parents, 'just in case.' He went on the traditional royal meet and greet when he was eight, along with his big sister and two little brothers, but he didn't really take much of it in the first time around. There weren't any other kids around his age, and it was all just a whole lot of boring travel and sub-standard conditions when he got there.
When Keldirande was 15, that 'in case' happened. His older sister got some disease that the healers couldn't fix, and she died. Keldirande was left as crown prince, though it was a good year until he finally accepted his fate. He started properly attending the weekly council meetings where the council basically just tells the monarchs what's been shaking around Llayad/Wensleydale, and helping his mother plan dinner parties and such. He was sort of just doing it, though. He didn't really put the effort into it.
One of these parties introduced a new musician to the Wensleydale castle, a harpist from a nearby town. She would come to Wensleydale every now and then, sometimes to perform, sometimes simply as a guest to one of the parties. It was, of course, Keldirande's mother who was setting this all up, but he wasn't to know that. Finally, he worked up the courage to ask Rilldana to dinner. She declined (because omfg be QUEEN are you NUTS man?), but this was probably the snap Keldirande needed. Now he had a PURPOSE in life! So he hounded Rilldana as only an elegant Llayan crown prince can, and finally she agreed to his courtship. So they officially courted for two years as per tradition, then spent a year engaged (tradition is six months but they're freaking royalty. That shit takes time) and got married yaaaaaay. They did their equally traditional royal meet-and-greets to the other royal families around the kingdoms, which was crap for the travelling but pretty awesome once he got to meet all the foreign royalty. Since it was just him and his new wife on the journey this time, he felt properly like he was going to lead his nation. He felt like a king.
Anyway. Got home and started making babies yaaaay. Evelandel, Kuhedrin, Amyrallyn and Lynnlita, such important people in his life now. And by this stage he's still only in his 40s, geeze. Yeah, they started late, because of Keldirande's initial reluctance to approach Rilldana, and then Rilldana's reluctance to become queen. Somewhere in there his own parents carked it and I think he's been king for about 20 years now? I dunno, either Llayad's been pretty quiet the last 20 years (likely) or important things that affect plot have happened and can't be decided on the spot in a random character profile. I'm guessing the first.

CHARACTER Keldirande has his kingly face that he wears in public (see above) and which Nol sees as his attempt to intimidate but really he's just trying to look noble and stern. Mostly, Keldirande is slightly intimidated by the outside royals because they know what they're doing. Behind closed doors, when he's just with his family, he's a smiling father and now grandpa who does what he can to help his children through life. He laments not having taken more of an interest in the nitty gritty of Llayan politics, but watching his daughter Evelandel growing up, he knows the kingdom will be in safe hands.

POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Keldirande loves planning parties with his darling wife, putting his crown on and feeling noble and kingly. He's well aware he doesn't actually do much with the council, but he knows the people look to him for leadership anyway, and is more than happy to play the part.
  • Llayan royalty is boring yaaaay.
