Character 100-ish 027: Swordsman Kurae

Turned the Not-a-NaNo into the Character 100-ish for the new year, so there'll be people you know in the mix now. That's fun :D

NAME Kurae
WHO IS THIS PERSON Swordsman in the current King's Own, Raykin's elite warrior force of the fifteen best in the kingdom.
GENDER Male
AGE 36
BRIEF BIO Kurae is from the coastal Raykinian town of Ni-Badra and, against the wishes of his parents, he left for Ni-Yana at age 17 to join the army. His parents had their sights set on him being a fisherman and were pretty angry with this decision, but he wouldn't back down.
Kurae briefly had a girlfriend as a teenager, but they drifted before anything got particularly serious. He's gay but he hides it well, most especially from himself, because frankly he doesn't think it's anyone's business, and he hates being talked about. Especially in his current position, he knows if it got out he'd be the most talked about man in Ni-Yana for MONTHS and he doesn't want that. He's a private man.
So after a late start (most boys sign up for army training at age 15), Kurae graduated at age 24 into Third Company, then basically gained a Company every year until he was invited to take up the Own challenge, which he won first time. It was at that point that his parents realised he had made the right choice, and were incredibly proud of him.
He's since been on twelve missions with the King's Own and has entrenched himself there as the chef, though he endures this title with a groan because he knows the stuff he cooks on the road is pretty damn basic compared to what he does at home.
CHARACTER Stony, stoic and judging most of the time. He doesn't take praise well, so the fame he's earned riding with the King's Own doesn't sit well with him. He doesn't mean to have such an unapproachable expression, it's just that he doesn't like the inevitable praise from complete strangers. Among the swordies of the Own, Kurae has a very droll, sarcastic sense of humour. Often his remarks are so dry that really only the swordies pick up that they're supposed to be jokes. He's a down-to-earth, rational man. He doesn't understand magic and trusts it even less. He's a creature of habit with a very ordered life, a schedule he keeps to every day and specific methods, and he doesn't like for it to be disrupted.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Kurae has a pet cat called Pepper. It's grey.
His horse is a uniform dark brown stallion with a black tail and mane. He calls it Charcoal, because Kurae is not very inventive with names.
Kurae is a leftie. He often tries to trick people with this on his first encounter with them. His fighting style is very much to use such tricks and to win through deception.
He loves cooking, but his sword will always be his first love.
