Character 100-ish 033: Bekala
Feb. 11th, 2014 03:36 pmI've run out of Nostalgia Critics to watch while I'm drawing these. WOE. TRAGEDY. ANGST.

She's supposed to be a fairly plain woman but with a ready smile. Not sure about her eyes.
NAME Bekala
WHO IS THIS PERSON Wife of Garuk, one of the current Raykinian King's Own (elite warrior dudes).
GENDER Female
AGE 33
BRIEF BIO Bekala's father was a rider with the King's Own, but he was killed on his first mission, too soon to have earned the vast riches your average longer-serving Own rider is renowned for. Bekala's family was left with just enough money to leg it from Ni-Yana (her mother couldn't stand the looks and the questions) and move downstream to Ni-Qewira. This all happened when Bekala was too young to remember, but her earliest memories were of having to scrape by to survive, working for food and some days going without. When she was 12, her mother's boss was killed by Tsaythi pirates, so the family uprooted again and headed back to Ni-Yana.
Bekala got a job working in the kitchens of a small pub in Ni-Yana, where she met a young army trainee called Garuk. He was even more shy then than he is now, and Bekala felt drawn to him and his quiet ways. They married when she was 18 (Raykinian tradition, men marry the full moon after their 20th birthday) and then the idiot went and became the best archer in Raykin. Bekala herself opened a restaurant, because she'd be damned if she was going to fall the same way as her mother did should the worst happen.
CHARACTER Bekala is a very strong, independent woman and, financially at least, she would be able to manage well if Garuk were to not come back from a mission. She's incredibly practical, often to the point of seeming without emotion, but this is all because of where she's come from. She figures if she can get the practical side of life to work, then she'll allow herself the luxury of emotions.
POINTS OF INTEREST
When Garuk is away, Bekala keeps herself busy to keep her mind off things, but when he's been gone a month and she knows he'll have crossed the border, she breaks down.
Bekala hates the reputation the King's Own has, where the public forgets they're just as human as everyone else. His status in the Own is the only point of contention between her and her husband. Ten years and she still hasn't stopped hounding him to quit, though she's largely resigned to it all now.
She loves the atmosphere of a pub night, but doesn't like the taste of beer herself. Yes, she's mocked like hell for it.
Bekala has a somewhat pockmarked face from bad acne as a teenager, slightly crooked teeth, but a broad and ready smile despite that. She's a very short pear-shaped woman. Usually has her hair back in a headband or bandana, especially when working in the kitchens.

She's supposed to be a fairly plain woman but with a ready smile. Not sure about her eyes.
