Character 100-ish 046: Queen Aliah
Apr. 20th, 2014 11:26 pmI have a feeling this is going to be more of an interesting one than she's been previously.

Come out quite well, I think she has. They haven't yet had time to invent much in the way of makeup or jewellery yet, so polished river pebbles and charcoal it is.
NAME Queen Aliah of Yrae-kin
WHO IS THIS PERSON Yan's wife, and the first queen of what later became Raykin.
GENDER Female
AGE Deceased age 60-something I think. I haven't quite figured out timelines around then. Pictured in her 30s as Yan remembers her.
BRIEF BIO Aliah grew up, as everyone did at that time, in a hunger-gatherer family group in the desert. Her parents and Yan's parents arranged their marriage when they were both very young, young enough that Aliah herself doesn't remember a time when she wasn't his betrothed. They grew up beside each other as good friends, helping with the chores around the camp and generally living as their people had for thousands of years, and, it seemed, would for thousands more.
Then Yan found his yrae feather and flew off discovering the world for a few months. Aliah always trusted that he would come back, because by this stage they were in their late teens and very much in love. Sure enough, Yan returned just in time to marry her and fill her mind with all his newly-discovered dreams of world domination. Aliah loved the idea, and the two of them set about creating the kingdom of Yrae-kin. They set up the first settlement, which Aliah governed during Yan's absences while he established similar villages along the river, sort of a week-on-week-off thing.
About a year after they married, Aliah gave birth to twins, Mina and Aké. Aliah loved them, though she didn't leave her duties as queen behind just to be a mother. Responsibility to the people was a big thing back then. She helped to shape the new kingdom of Yrae-kin as much as Yan did. It was probably this stress, which only built with more and more people moving to Ni-Yana, that delayed her next baby, a son called Noku, for another decade or thereabouts (again, not 100% on the timelines here. I should do that.)
When Aliah was 41--and Yan 45--Yan was killed by his advisor, Qewir. Aliah took her children and fled. She'd grown up in the desert and knew she could handle it. Many of those who sympathised with her and her husband's cause left with her, but most went up or downstream to the other villages that were establishing themselves. Aliah was pretty much left alone with her teenage daughters and five-year-old son.
On Mina's insistence, they fished Yan's body out of the river, healed his face where Qewir had stabbed a sword through it, and began work on bringing him back to life. They experimented first on birds and snakes, and that was pretty much the rest of Aliah's life. Some years later (insert maths here), the four of them succeeded in bringing a baby eagle back, but Aliah was too old and weak to handle that magic anymore, and the effort killed her.
CHARACTER Aliah was hard. She was a born leader, especially growing up beside Yan's ambitious mind, and shared most of his ideas. She was the product of a time where only strength survived and disdained any form of weakness. The larger Ni-Yana grew, the more of it she saw, people relying on others to do even simple tasks, and started to see them almost as animals compared to her ruling class, and hence started treating them as such, too.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Aliah's legacy is the class system. Yep. Gj Aliah.
YanxAliah is my otp. Seriously. A thousand years on and he still misses her like burning.
