Character 100-ish 078: Mali

On we gooooo I do like getting characters I've already had to make up a background for. I can pretty much just c+p from the Big Book of Stuff, so that's nice.
Sure is a bruise on her shoulder. Didn't quite cover it up with hair. Now Kaen will be mad.
NAME Mali
WHO IS THIS PERSON Wife of Kaen, a current blade archer in the Raykinian King's Own, best fifteen warriors in the kingdom
GENDER Female
AGE 30
BRIEF BIO Mali was born far south of the Main Road in a broken family full of violence and missed meals, which her mind has chosen to forget in detail, so she only remembers it now as fear and pain. She ran away from home when she was ten, crossed the Main Road and got lost in the much more affluent northern districts. A lovely lady there took her in, fed and clothed her with finer food and clothes than Mali ever imagined existed, and generally made Mali feel loved for the first time in her life. She helped to decorate the front bar with silks and beads and other beautiful things, and Mali felt she had really made it. Already she started to forget the details of her former life.
It wasn't long before she discovered that the bar was actually a brothel, and she began working as a prostitute there at fifteen. For the most part, her clients treated her well enough, with the odd one or two who hurt her and were promptly chucked out with warnings from the proprietor to never return. Really, though, even those who didn't hurt her treated her as little more than an object, making their demands and gripping her hard. Still, given the life she'd fled and that they were paying well for her, Mali saw nothing wrong and still thought she had made a wonderful life for herself.
After a few months, she met a new client who changed all those perceptions she had. Kaen, a training blade archer at the palace, seemed to genuinely care for her wellbeing. Not just because he was paying her, or because he wanted her to look nice, or for any selfish reason, but because he cared for her. It didn't take long for Mali to become infatuated with him. After six months, when Mali was sixteen, Kaen proposed on the condition that she leave the brothel that night. Mali couldn't imagine anything better, and followed him blindly.
For the first five years, Mali's marriage was absolute bliss--and, she would argue, it still is. Kaen lavished her from the start with expensive dresses and perfume and dinners and everything. He was as passionate about her as when he had first walked into the brothel, and he made her feel beautiful and loved. Still does all these things, too, but a year or two into their marriage, Kaen started to subtly set down rules and tell Mali off for not following them. He had her so well-trained that when he hit her for the first time after five years, she contritely apologised and promised to be a good girl. The whole thing's gone downhill from there, but Kaen knows exactly when to apologise himself, how to turn on the charm and treat her tenderly, so that Mali thinks nothing has changed.
CHARACTER Mali's life now is so dominated by Kaen that it's hard for her to have any character of her own. She's a weak, beaten child. Her whole life has been spent with others very strongly controlling it and so she has no idea how to take control herself. She never leaves the villa unless she's hanging off of Kaen's arm, at which point she carries herself exceptionally well, just like the graceful and drop-dead gorgeous wife of an Own rider she knows she is. She laps up the looks of envy she gets, from both men and women alike, and she knows her life is perfect. At home, she's very lustful for Kaen, though whether this is a product of love or fear is uncertain. She knows it can only be love.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Mali herself refuses guests at home. Growing up south of the Main Road and seeing the baser side of human nature working in the brothel, the real world scares her and she'll only ever face it with Kaen.
