Character 100-ish 107: Commander Sholah
Aug. 16th, 2014 01:44 pmUuuughhhh I want to draw more. Damn life screwing up my creativity.

This is his 'I just had a meeting with Empress Shizaaqa' face.
NAME Commander Sholah
WHO IS THIS PERSON Current commander in the Assiraz army's Commanding Circle.
GENDER Male
AGE 37
BRIEF BIO Sholah grew up in an actual stable family, with supportive parents who are still together and three sisters who are all children of those same two parents. I know. Weird, right? Kazin doesn't do that. His parents were actually partners, not exclusively matriarchal. Sholah himself started army training just because it was the done thing, not through any great desire or anything.
In the army, though, he saw a whole lot of men trying to control others, officers using their rank as an excuse to abuse those below them, bullying disguised as discipline, and he didn't like it. He told his parents about this, and they gave him the options: either you can quit now and do something entirely different with your life (he was still young at this point, nothing lost) or he could make a difference.
Given he's a commander now, it's pretty obvious which route he took. Sholah climbed up the rank ladder to commander a few years ago now with the express purpose of shaking up the command system. He's hidden it until now, knowing that compassion for the soldiers wasn't what got a man into that position, but he's recently started making petitions--not to Shizaaqa, but to her daughter. He points out which officers are purely in it for themselves and which actually have Kazin's and the men's best interests at heart. He's not particularly confident that she's been listening (remember this is pre-Tarnish Assili) but hang in there, Sholah, you'll get something happening.
He also has a not-wife, who he met at a bar. She was admiring his tattoo, saying she knew who did it because she's a tattoo artist, too. The two of them now have three kids, whom Sholah is teaching all the life lessons he's learnt himself.
CHARACTER Compassionate, team player, friendly, all those qualities you wouldn't expect in a Kazinian commander. Sholah is good at reading people, and knows just how to endear himself to them, but unlike the rest of the Commanding Circle he's doing this out of a genuine like for people and a desire to be liked in return. He can play the hard ball when he needs to, but that's just it, he's playing it. He'd prefer to just shake hands and get on with things.
POINTS OF INTEREST
The tattoo on his right shoulder is the tip of a bird's wing, which covers his back in turquoise, blue and purple. It was going to be a more hard tat than that, but I'm reserving that one now for the last commander, who is Shizaaqa's brother, whenever he rocks up.
