Their Majesties stood silently at the wide window of their bedchamber that overlooked the capital city of the kingdom they ruled. How long the silence had endured for, Mithé could not say, but it was far from being an uncomfortable silence.
He cast his eyes from the red-golden city to the beautiful, dark hair of the woman nestled in the crook of his arm. He smiled warmly, laying a hand on her swollen belly. No, it wasn’t an uncomfortable silence at all.
“Mithé?” The queen’s voice, always sharp and commanding to her court, was gentle and mellow to her king.
“Hmm?” Mithé smoothed his hand over her stomach, swathed in delicate violet silk. ‘If only Raykin could know her as she is now,’ he thought wistfully.
Alurié nuzzled the back of her head into his arm, resting her hand on Mithé’s. “Have you given any consideration to the name of our child?”
The king shook his head. “I haven’t,” he admitted. “What are your ideas?”
Alurié was silent for a while longer, and Mithé picture the small frown on her brow that meant she was thinking. “I don’t wish to give the baby a name of someone already celebrated; else he will feel the need to live up to the expectations of others. I want a name so people will remember the child, not the original benefactor of her name.”
Mithé smiled affectionately, amused at the quirk his wife had of changing the child’s gender from one sentence to another. “Have you any names you like better than others?”
A small shrug lifted Alurié’s shoulders. “I’ve always liked the name Rinala for a girl,” she confessed.
“And if it’s a boy?” the king prompted.
“If he’s a boy,” Alurié mused, placing a slight emphasis on ‘he’s’, “Nolryn.”
