NAME Kaen
WHO IS THIS PERSON Blade archer in the current Raykinian King's Own, the best fifteen warriors in Raykin. He also happens to be the best blade archer in the kingdom.
GENDER Male
AGE 34
BRIEF BIO Kaen grew up an only child, the son of a former Own rider in a high-class villa in Ni-Yana, and has always been accustomed to getting his way. He began his army training at 14, a year earlier than normal, because he impressed the general with his blade archery skills. Being the misogynistic bastard he is, Kaen chose his wife especially to be pretty and give good head. He found Mali, a drop-dead gorgeous girl who pretty much grew up in a brothel and didn't know any better life. She didn't take much wooing, and they married after only six months.
Kaen laid on the love and romance early on, going to far as to even pay for nights with her when he would just talk or even take her to dinner, with no talk of sex at all. When they married, he started making rules. As their marriage developed, he became more and more controlling, going so far as to hit her when she did something wrong. He's still happy to buy her anything she wants, and treat her with as much tenderness as she desires, but Mali is treading on eggshells in his presence. Despite all this, she loves him painfully.
Kaen graduated into First Company at 22, two years after marrying Mali. After barely a year in the army, he took up the Own challenge and beat Nihqel (current blade archery master) to get into the King's Own. He's since been on thirteen missions, making him one of the veteran Own riders.
CHARACTER Sexist, misogynist and just plain irritating. Kaen is an abusive arse who controls every aspect of his wife's life, and has no issues in hitting her if she does something he deems wrong, and has instilled in her a fear of the world outside their villa that effectively keeps her locked inside unless she's hanging off his arm.
Kaen is charming to the extreme when he wants to be. He knows exactly what buttons to press to attract a pretty lady, and he works his magic often.
He's an incredible show-off, often going to pubs he doesn't generally frequent and playing dagger toss just to see how long it takes for people to pick up on who he is. Kaen is a very sore loser, so it's a good thing it doesn't happen too often.
Kaen, like so many blade archers, has a bad habit of throwing things at people just to irritate them. Be it at the bar, in training, or even at a mission debriefing, he'll be pitting pebbles, nuts or fruit stones at whoever he feels like annoying next.
He's dedicated to his training, not just with his knives but with all other weapons, too. This probably comes from being a sore loser; he doesn't want anyone to be better than him if he can do something about it.
POINTS OF INTEREST
One of Kaen's favourite games is to drop in on the archers while they're training and put them off their game, then he gets the double bonus of making them irritated at him, as well as at themselves.
Kaen is an absolute connoisseur, and even has a wine cellar that he doesn't tell the boys about. Kaen isn't afraid to spend money to improve his life.
Kaen loves professional female singing. It gives him goosebumps if done right.
He always spends his birthday night at home with Mali, as well as the night before a mission. He spends the evening sharpening each blade, then the rest of his time until he leaves is dedicated to her.
On the eve of the border crossing, Kaen thinks pragmatically about the mission ahead. He doesn't think of it as a mission, rather an irritating period of rain and cold and a complete lack of luxury. The prospect of danger is the only bit of excitement, as far as he's concerned.
He doesn't like to kiss a woman in public, but if she moves to kiss him he won't turn her away.
Kaen is well aware Yoryl has a crush on him, and the announcement came as no surprise to him, either. He doesn't mind Yoryl eyeing him—Kaen sees no real difference between men and women looking at him admiringly—but he won't allow Yoryl to go any further than that. Since the ground rules were laid down, their friendship has grown strong, and they openly mock each other, especially over their sexual preferences.
Even though Nimay is Kaen's general, he loves to push her buttons as much as any woman or non-blade archer. He particularly loves to accuse her of using magic to better her battle skills.
Saku is Kaen's official fanboy. He likes the bastards.
