Character 100-ish 118: Niccolai

The only one of the completely fictional characters! I mean. Fictional in their world. Gods don't count because people believe in them so to them they exist. Niccolai doesn't.
That is sadly the fakest grin I've drawn in a while. He's supposed to have a wide easy grin that makes him less scary and instead he looks a bit like he's going to eat you. Balls.
NAME Niccolai
WHO IS THIS PERSON The second of the main characters from Tooth and Claw, a Llayan fairy tale I wrote for Sallie. He's a fictional character in Llayad, doesn't actually exist (unlike Rutherford who started out life that way but then became real. Niccolai won't be doing that.)
GENDER Male
AGE Started out the story late 20s, finished it in his late 30s.
BRIEF BIO Being a storybook character who doesn't really exist outside that story, there's not much to it. I mean, I'm sure Llayad has expanded on the canon because they're Llayad, but Niccolai's life is pretty straightforward. He grew up in some little fairytale village somewhere, where he lived with his parents, brother and sisters and extended family. He was a hunter for the village, until one day the village got caught up in the war between the wolves and hyenas. By which I mean werewolves and werehyenas, just so we're clear.
The hyenas killed or captured pretty much everyone in the village before the wolves came and saved all two who were left: Niccolai and his cousin Anouschka. Anouschka, a feisty girl, hit out at the wolves thinking them the enemies, too, and was bitten for her trouble. The wolves then also bit Niccolai, so the two family members could stay together. At the next full moon, and every full moon thereafter, Niccolai transformed into a wolf and warred with the rest of them against the hyenas, in revenge for his family.
And now the spoilers commence! So after quite some time of living like this, rescuing people from the hyenas and killing off hyenas in the process, Niccolai met a girl called Karalynn, the last survivor from her gypsy caravan. The two fell in love, and with her kiss on a full moon, she was able to turn him human again. Just summed up the entire story in two sentences but that's the crux of it. And they lived happily ever after to have much fanfiction and sequels written about them.
CHARACTER Fiercely protective and loyal. Niccolai has been vengeful for many years, and the attack on his village severely darkened his world view, but he's come to love his new 'family' of sorts. He's always been hopeful of changing back and going back to living a normal life in a normal village. He misses the domestic.
POINTS OF INTEREST
What the Llayans call 'wolves' are African wild dogs, hence the dark facial hair and the dark stripe in his hair. African wild dogs are gorgeous. They're also the only canines in Tsyllaes.
Niccolai, unlike Rutherford, will never become a real person in Silent Harmony because the presence of werewolves raises way too many societal questions that I don't need in the story. No humanoid fantasy creatures. Dragons and griffins are fine, though.
Tooth and Claw was born of Sallie's love of werewolves, Beauty and the Beast, rough and rugged male characters and age gaps in romantic relationships.
Llayan werewolves are mostly like traditional werewolves with a couple of exceptions to fit the plot. They either appear 100% human (though with wolfish features, like the long nose, big grin, big ears and patchy coloured hair) or 100% wolf, no sort of beast inbetween form. They have no control over their transformation; it happens as the full moon rises at sunset, then when it sets again at dawn. It's not painful at all. Also the 'kiss at full moon' thing to turn them human I completely made up for plot purposes.
