Nimay swept her eyes over the vast Llayan plains, bathed in rustling golden grass that rolled in waves. It seemed that the entire kingdom was bathed in saffron, even the desert. If she wasn’t Raykinian, she decided, she’d be Llayan.
“I’ve never been particularly fond of Llayad.” Nolryn muttered. His eyes were fixed on a lazing spotted Llayan feline, similar to the jaguars of tropical Kazin. It eyed the small company with lazy indifference, twisting its tail and flicking an ear at a passing fly.
“You’re not particularly fond of any kingdom but your own,” Melraan countered.
The prince swung an arm out at the imitation-jaguar. “At least our animals look like they’re going to kill you. Snakes, spiders, scorpions… you just know by looking at them that the first thing on their mind is to poison you. Llayan animals look all soft and cuddly until you try and pat them, then they bare their teeth and claws at you.”
Nimay turned her attention to the cat; it yawned widely, displaying sharp teeth, and rested its head on its front paws so that it disappeared below the grass. Only the tip of its twisting tail was visible, dancing like a charmed cobra above the waves of grass.
Melraan grunted. “So… why are we here?” he asked, not for the first time. Nimay had to admit, she didn’t know the full idea behind the prince’s exploits.
“Well, I’m here to win an elephant,” Nol began.
“So you’ve said,” the swordsman replied blandly. Nimay waved away a fly, an equally bland expression on her face.
“And you’re here to win the swordfight.”
“Again, so you’ve said. But what are we actually going to get out of this?”
Nol scratched at his upper arm, obviously stalling. Nimay cleared her throat.
“I figured I’d wait until we were closer to Nenyad than Ni-Yana,” he conceded, then took a deep breath and answered Melraan’s question in a rush. “Third prize is 50 gold pieces, second is a sword and first is a camel.”
Both swordsmen stared at the prince, unblinking.
Nol shifted uneasily in his saddle. Evidently he had been expecting such a response, as well he should.
Melraan finally broke the silence. “We’re riding for… what did you say? Two months? We’re riding for two months so we can get a sword and a camel.”
“It’s fun!” the prince protested. “I participated last time, and it was great fun, even though I didn’t win. We’re even going to set up a Mini Thrai this year.” He grinned. “Great fun.”
“A sword, and a camel,” Melraan persisted insipidly.
Nolryn shrugged. “You could always come third, or sell the sword and camel while we’re still here.”
The swordsman turned to Nimay, eyebrows raised. “Do you want the sword or the camel?”
Nimay rolled her eyes and shook her head, then turned her attention back to the Llayan cat. It seemed infinitely more interesting.
